Speed is one of the most crucial attributes for players aiming to reach the top, especially in the Premier League. No matter how technically gifted a player may be, if they can't keep up with the physical demands of England's top flight, they risk being overpowered by more aggressive opponents.

The debate over who is the fastest player at each club is a common one. Take Kyle Walker, for instance, who often claims to be Manchester City's fastest player, despite last season's stats suggesting otherwise. This remains true for the 2024/25 season as well, with Squawka, using Opta data, listing the fastest players from the first 11 rounds of the Premier League.

Amadou Onana has been one of the most surprising players in the Premier League this season, particularly when it comes to his pace. The former Everton defensive midfielder was never renowned for his speed, but at Aston Villa this term, he clocked a top speed of 35.54 km/h.

The Belgian international is just slightly slower than Gabriel Martinelli (35.57 km/h) and Antonee Robinson (35.63 km/h), who sit in ninth and eighth place, respectively. Martinelli, in particular, faces competition from Leandro Trossard for his starting spot under Mikel Arteta. However, Martinelli’s natural speed, which surpasses that of Trossard and Raheem Sterling, could be crucial in helping him retain his role. His pace could make all the difference when Arsenal needs a quick burst to break through a low block.

Despite a top speed of 35.69 km/h, Timo Werner isn't the fastest player at Tottenham Hotspur. Meanwhile, somewhat surprisingly, Erling Haaland has just missed out on a spot in the top five. Known for his physicality, the Norwegian striker's recent form has seen his 35.74 km/h speed fall behind others.

5. Mykhailo Mudryk - 35.79 km/h

Chelsea

Narrowly edging out Haaland for fifth place is Chelsea's ever-changing left-winger, Mykhailo Mudryk. The Ukrainian, who made a £62m move to the west London club in January 2023, hasn't always replicated the form he showed at Shakhtar Donetsk. However, his speed has remained a consistent asset.

After seven games this season, the 23-year-old is yet to register a goal or assist, and with competition now coming from the likes of Jadon Sancho, Joao Felix, and Christopher Nkunku, Mudryk will be hoping his pace can prove decisive before he risks being dropped from the starting lineup.

4. Anthony Elanga - 35.90 km/h

Nottingham Forest

Sold by Manchester United to Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2023, the club may now regret their decision as the former Red Devil has quickly settled into life at the City Ground – and that’s not even factoring in his blistering pace. In fact, the Swedish winger narrowly misses out on a bronze medal among the Premier League’s fastest players this season, recording a top speed of 35.90 km/h.

Last season, Anthony Elanga was the fastest forward in the Premier League, reaching a top speed of 36.91 km/h. While he hasn’t matched that speed this season yet, it's still early, and defenders will certainly be wary of giving the 22-year-old any space, knowing the damage he can cause when he hits full stride.

3. Carlos Forbs - 36.57 km/h

Wolverhampton Wanderers

In recent years, Wolves have brought in several players with impressive speed, and while some have left, like Pedro Neto and Adama Traoré, the duo used to have fans on the edge of their seats with their explosive bursts of pace. Traoré, in particular, was known for his lightning speed and powerful runs.

These days, though, the Old Gold still have plenty of rapid talent, including new signing Carlos Forbs, who ranks as the third-fastest player in the Premier League this season. Arriving from Jong Ajax in the summer, the young winger has already made an impact as a substitute under Gary O'Neil. With a top speed of 36.57 km/h, it almost feels like Traoré never left.

2. Matheus Nunes - 36.72 km/h

Manchester City

Although not a regular starter under Pep Guardiola, Matheus Nunes truly comes alive when he accelerates. Playing on the left flank just before the November international break, the midfielder recorded the second-fastest sprint speed in the Premier League, reaching 36.72 km/h during his match against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Known for his industrious, hardworking style, few would have expected the Portuguese international to rank so high on this list. Typically conserving his energy, Nunes' recent positional shift suggests that the 26-year-old could have a promising future in charging down the flank with pace.

1. Micky van de Ven - 37.12 km/h

Tottenham Hotspur

When Tottenham Hotspur's Micky van de Ven takes possession of the ball, everyone knows what he's about to do, but very few can stop him once he opens up his stride, as Manchester United discovered. Despite being a central defender, his remarkable pace—combined with his ability to weave through opponents—seems almost unnatural for a player of his size.

This unique combination makes his runs incredibly hard to predict. In their 3-0 win over Erik ten Hag’s side, van de Ven reached a top speed of 37.12 km/h while tracking back to challenge Alejandro Garnacho in first-half stoppage time, making him the fastest player in the 2024/25 season by a significant margin.
