15 Players With the Most Premier League Hat-Tricks (Ranked)

Scoring three goals in a single Premier League match is no small achievement. While some players go their entire careers without netting even once, a select few have mastered the art of the hat-trick, making it seem as simple as a two-piece puzzle.
Hat-tricks are a rarity in the upper echelons of Premier League football. Since the league's inception in 1992, only around 4% of the thousands of players to feature in the competition have managed to score three goals in one game.
Despite being the most successful club in Premier League history, Manchester United went seven years without a player recording a hat-trick between 2013 and 2020. Here’s a look at the players who consistently made scoring in threes their specialty.

15. Ian Wright – 5
Ian Wright burst onto the scene during Crystal Palace’s 1988/89 campaign, helping 'The Eagles' secure promotion to the First Division. It didn’t take long for one of the top clubs to come calling, and in 1991, Arsenal were the fortunate ones to snap him up. With the dawn of the Premier League aligning perfectly with Wright hitting his prime, defenders across England were in for a tough time.
In March 1994, Wright bagged two hat-tricks within a fortnight and went on to add three more in an Arsenal shirt before leaving the club in 1998. Though he later helped West Ham United achieve a fifth-place finish, Wright ended his Premier League career with five match balls to his name.

5. | 13th September 1997 | Arsenal 4-1 Bolton |
14. Raheem Sterling – 5
Somehow, through some mysterious footballer magic or exclusive elite surgery, Raheem Sterling is still just 29, despite what feels like a lifetime in the Premier League. After bursting onto the scene as a teenage sensation at Liverpool, Manchester City swooped in with a hefty sum—now considered small change—given Sterling’s pivotal role under Pep Guardiola.
Nicknamed 'Raheem the Dream,' Sterling notched five hat-tricks for 'The Cityzens,' including a perfect treble against Norwich City in 2022. While time is still on his side, Sterling has yet to add to his tally since becoming one of the first marquee signings for Todd Boehly’s Chelsea.

13. Robin van Persie – 5
The first player on this list to have scored hat-tricks for two different Premier League clubs—and certainly not the last—is Robin van Persie. Arsenal brought him to Highbury in 2004, and it always felt like the Dutchman was destined for greatness. However, injuries plagued much of his time in north London, preventing him from reaching his full potential early on.
That all changed in 2011 when Van Persie turned into an unstoppable goal machine, netting as if his life depended on it. After racking up 96 league goals and three hat-tricks for Arsenal, he made the controversial move to Manchester United in 2012. While the transfer earned him a place among football’s biggest “traitors,” it also saw him collect two more hat-tricks—one of which helped secure his first Premier League title.

12. Ruud van Nistelrooy – 5
Another Dutchman who left an indelible mark in Manchester, Ruud van Nistelrooy was a nightmare for defenders from the moment he joined the Red Devils in 2001. Having terrorized backlines in the Netherlands for years, he brought his goal-scoring prowess to Old Trafford, where his prime years were spent racking up goals at an astonishing rate.
Van Nistelrooy ended his Manchester United career with 150 goals across all competitions, 95 of which came in the Premier League. Among them were five hat-tricks, three of which were netted in a single season. His prolific form made him a hot commodity, and it’s no surprise that Real Madrid came calling in 2006.

11. Andy Cole – 5
In the early 1990s, Arsenal could have boasted both Ian Wright and Andy Cole leading their attack if they'd shown just a bit more patience. The Gunners let Cole slip through their fingers, unaware of the prolific striker he would become. It's easy to imagine some scouts in north London looking back, feeling like Marlon Brando in The Godfather, lamenting, "Look how they massacred my boy!"
Manchester United wasted no time, swooping in to snatch Cole from Newcastle in 1995 after he had already impressed with two hat-tricks in black-and-white stripes. The Premier League Hall of Famer would go on to add three more at Old Trafford, including his famous five-goal haul in United’s 9-0 thrashing of Ipswich. He later claimed match balls against Barnsley in 1997 and, fittingly, rounded off his Premier League hat-trick collection in 1999 by scoring four goals against his former club, Newcastle.

5. | 30th August 1999 | Man Utd 5-1 Newcastle |
10. Dimitar Berbatov – 5
Dimitar Berbatov scored his first Premier League hat-trick with Tottenham Hotspur, netting four goals against a struggling Reading side in 2007. However, his time at Manchester United saw him produce some truly memorable performances.
Among his standout moments was a five-goal masterclass against Blackburn Rovers in 2010, followed by hat-tricks against Birmingham and Wigan in 2011. Yet, the treble that remains iconic for United fans came against arch-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford. Berbatov became the first United player to score a hat-trick in this fierce fixture since 1946. Reflecting on the moment, the Bulgarian striker allowed himself a rare moment of pride: "A hat-trick, at Old Trafford, against Liverpool, to win the game. Perfect."

9. Luis Suarez – 6
When Luis Suarez made his move to Barcelona from Liverpool in the summer of 2014, there were two places eagerly awaiting the transfer. One was Barcelona, and the other was Norwich, relieved to finally be rid of him. Three of Suarez’s six Liverpool hat-tricks came against The Canaries, with the Uruguayan netting a staggering 10 goals against them during his time at Anfield.
He also claimed hat-tricks against Wigan, West Brom, and Cardiff City, leaving an indelible mark on the Premier League. Despite his time in England being marred by controversy and ending in a strike, no player ever instilled as much dread in a single city as Luis Alberto Suarez Diaz.

8. Wayne Rooney – 7
Tied for seventh on the list with seven Premier League hat-tricks, Wayne Rooney achieved a level of satisfaction akin to watching the DVD logo hit the corner of the screen. Rooney, who dazzled with a hat-trick against Fenerbahce in his Champions League debut in 2004, didn’t notch his first Premier League treble until two years later.
He went on to score six more hat-tricks with Manchester United before finally completing his final hat-trick with Everton in 2017, 13 years after leaving his former club.

7. Michael Owen – 8
Michael Owen may be better known to some younger fans for his lackluster punditry and a less-than-stellar helicopter tour of Dubai, but he was once a Ballon d’Or-winning striker and one of Europe’s most feared forwards.
The Chester-born forward scored 158 goals for Liverpool, including seven Premier League hat-tricks from 1998 to 2003. After a brief stint in Madrid, Owen joined Newcastle United in 2005, where he added his eighth and final Premier League hat-trick to his record in December of that year.

6. Harry Kane – 8
Now that Harry Kane has moved to the Bundesliga, his tally of Premier League hat-tricks may remain at its current impressive figure. This is great news for those still on the list, as the England captain was certainly a strong contender for the top spot.
Since bursting onto the scene in 2015, the Tottenham striker has made Premier League defenders wish they were facing Kane from WWE rather than Kane from Walthamstow. With eight Premier League hat-tricks to his name, Kane even achieved the rare feat of securing the match ball twice in the same week on two occasions.

Thierry Henry earned his statue outside the Emirates Stadium for very good reasons. Joining Arsenal in 1999, he became arguably the most pivotal player in Arsène Wenger's squad until his departure eight years later. On his day, Henry was simply unstoppable.
The majestic French forward scored seven Premier League hat-tricks within a span of just days during Arsenal's journey to becoming 'The Invincibles.' He played a crucial role in ensuring that the Gunners achieved the rare feat of going an entire league season unbeaten. Henry famously referred to Arsenal's former home, Highbury, as "my garden," and fittingly, he was responsible for the final three goals ever scored at that iconic ground.

4. Erling Haaland – 8
You knew he’d make an appearance eventually. Even though he’s only been in the Premier League for a short time, Erling Haaland has probably added another hat-trick to his tally while you read this entry. His role in Manchester City’s treble-winning season was crucial, scoring goals with an almost reckless abandon.
Haaland notched his third Premier League hat-trick in just his eighth game, equaling the number of trebles Cristiano Ronaldo scored across eight seasons. The Norwegian goal machine humorously credited his early success to his dad’s homemade lasagne, remarking, “It seems to be working well every game.”

3. Robbie Fowler – 9
Despite the impressive feats of those before him, it would be a crime to not place Robbie Fowler among the top three. In the mid-90s, Fowler treated the Premier League as his personal stage, earning the PFA Young Player of the Year award in both 1995 and 1996.
Fowler’s hat-tricks came during his eight years at Liverpool, with his perfect trilogies spread across various teams and seasons. The Merseyside legend netted eight match balls for the Reds, becoming the first player to achieve three perfect hat-tricks. He added his ninth and final hat-trick with Leeds United in 2001.

2. Alan Shearer – 11
Now that we're diving into double digits, things get intense. This is the section where strikers rack up five hat-tricks in a single season just for the thrill of it. Alan Shearer achieved this feat during the 1995/96 campaign, cementing his legendary status.
Even though Shearer continued to play in the Premier League until 2006, all 11 of his hat-tricks were scored in the 1990s. His most memorable performance came in 1999 when he netted five goals for Newcastle in an 8-0 thrashing of Sheffield Wednesday—an iconic match that marked his final Premier League hat-trick.

1. Sergio Aguero – 12
To put it simply, Manchester City's success over the past decade owes a great deal to Sergio Agüero. As the club's all-time leading scorer and the most prolific striker in their history, he tops this list.
With an impressive tally of 12 hat-tricks against 10 different teams—featuring one perfect hat-trick, two four-goal games, and a five-goal outburst over nine years—Agüero stands out as one of the 21st century's most prolific hat-trick scorers. While Erling Haaland is certainly closing in, he still has a long way to go to match the level of "Kun" Agüero.
