Winning the Premier League’s Player of the Month award is a significant achievement, recognizing a player’s standout performances over the course of a month. Since its introduction two seasons after the league's inception in 1992, it has been awarded to numerous top-flight stars, with the winner chosen through a combination of votes from a panel of experts, Premier League club captains, and a public vote. The fan vote accounts for 10% of the final decision.

Typically, the award is given to one player each month, but on six occasions, it has been shared between two players. Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton jointly received the honor in 1994, while the most recent shared award went to Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard in April 2014.

Some of the league's greatest players have claimed the award multiple times, with several intriguing facts about its history. For instance, one player has won it under two different nationalities, while another has captured the award an impressive four times in a single calendar year. These milestones showcase the quality and consistency required to dominate the Premier League month after month.

Two Player of the Month Awards

Number of players: 28

An impressive 28 players have had the distinction of winning the Premier League Player of the Month award more than once. Among the "old school" are stars like Dion Dublin, Tony Yeboah, and Gianfranco Zola, each claiming the accolade twice. Meanwhile, modern talents like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ilkay Gundogan have also secured the award twice.

Eden Hazard, widely regarded as one of the best Belgian players to grace the Premier League, surprisingly only won the award twice during his Chelsea career, despite consistently dazzling defenders. His first came in October 2016, with his second in September 2018. Both Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, part of Liverpool's memorable front three alongside Raheem Sterling, also claimed the honor twice.

Notably, Michail Antonio of West Ham United holds the unique distinction of winning the award under two different nationalities. He first won it in July 2020 as an Englishman and a year later after switching his international allegiance to Jamaica.

Three Player of the Month Awards

Number of players: 9

Tottenham cult heroes Gareth Bale and Robbie Keane are among the select group of Premier League players to have claimed a hat-trick of Player of the Month awards. Arsenal ace Raheem Sterling—featured in Liverpool’s all-time academy XI—also joins this exclusive club. Impressively, Keane earned his accolades while playing for three different clubs: Coventry City, Leeds United, and Tottenham.

Erling Haaland, one of the fastest players in the 2024/25 season, is expected to continue shattering records on English soil. As possibly the final piece in Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City puzzle, the prolific forward will likely add to his collection of awards if he maintains his goal-scoring prowess.

Manchester United legends Ruud van Nistelrooy and Dwight Yorke, famed for their scoring exploits at Old Trafford, also notched up three awards each. Everton’s Ashley Young, a versatile winger-turned-defender, is another name on the list, alongside Peter Odemwingie and Sadio Mane, who last won in February 2012 and November 2019, respectively. Securing three Player of the Month titles is a rare feat, but these players made it seem effortless during their time in the Premier League.

Four Player of the Month Awards

Number of players: 9

A diverse mix of Premier League greats has managed to accumulate four Player of the Month awards, including legends like Dennis Bergkamp, Paul Scholes, Marcus Rashford, and Heung-min Son. Scholes, despite his immense talent and contributions to Manchester United, might have been expected to feature higher on this list. Known for being one of the most underappreciated world-class players on the international stage, it seems he received similar treatment at the domestic level as well.

The same could be said for Thierry Henry, who had an electrifying career at Arsenal, tormenting defences year after year. Given his consistent brilliance, it's surprising that the Frenchman didn’t collect more than four Player of the Month awards. Meanwhile, Rashford and Son still have time to add to their totals, while the likes of Lampard, Bergkamp, and Shearer—now retired—will forever remain capped at four.

Bruno Fernandes, who made history by becoming the only player to win four Premier League Player of the Month awards in a single calendar year, has not added to his tally since his stellar 2020 run. Upon his arrival at Manchester United, Fernandes quickly established himself as the team's chief playmaker, orchestrating their attack with flair and precision. Given his immediate impact, it's no surprise that he is held in such high esteem in the league, even though he has yet to match his record-breaking achievements in more recent seasons.

Five Player of the Month Awards

Number of players: 3

Mohamed Salah's fifth Premier League Player of the Month award, claimed in October 2023, elevated him into an exclusive group alongside Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney. The "Egyptian King," often compared to Eden Hazard, first earned the accolade in November 2017, followed by back-to-back wins in February and March 2018. His latest victory signifies an important milestone, placing him alongside the two Manchester United legends. As a crucial figure in Liverpool's resurgence under Jurgen Klopp, Salah is poised to add even more honors before his illustrious career comes to a close.

Wayne Rooney, one of Manchester United’s all-time greatest strikers, scored prolifically throughout his career at Old Trafford and became the embodiment of the club’s fighting spirit. His contributions earned him five Premier League Player of the Month awards, with his final recognition coming in January 2010.

Robin van Persie, known as the "Flying Dutchman," also joins this elite group. Van Persie netted 144 goals in the Premier League, earning the award five times. Four of these came during his time at Arsenal, while his final one was in the 2012/13 season, where he played a pivotal role in securing Manchester United’s last league title.

Six Player of the Month Awards

Number of players: 2

Since the Premier League's rebranding three decades ago, only two players have managed to claim six Player of the Month awards: Steven Gerrard and Cristiano Ronaldo. No current player has matched the remarkable individual feats of these two stars, and surpassing their tally of six will be a monumental challenge. What a duo!

Gerrard, widely regarded as England’s best-ever player, became a Liverpool legend during his illustrious one-club career on Merseyside. His six awards are a testament to how often he carried the team through difficult times.

Ronaldo, one of football’s all-time greats, unsurprisingly sits near the top of this list. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner secured five of his six awards during his first spell at Manchester United, adding two more after his triumphant return to Old Trafford. Both players stand as shining examples of the Premier League's finest talents, just shy of joining the elite group with seven awards.

Seven Player of the Month Awards

Number of players: 2

The Premier League Player of the Month award, often claimed by those with a natural ability to find the back of the net, has seen only two players reach the remarkable milestone of winning it seven times—a feat that most can only dream of. Erling Haaland, this could be your next target.

Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane are the only two players to have collected a record-breaking seven Player of the Month accolades. Aguero, who was instrumental in Manchester City’s rise to dominance, won his first award in October 2013 and his last in January 2020. The Argentine, one of the greatest players in City's history, amassed an astonishing 260 goals across all competitions. His contributions were pivotal to Pep Guardiola’s success at the club, making his spot at the top of this list well-deserved.

Kane, meanwhile, was Tottenham’s talisman—reliable, versatile, and capable of both scoring and creating goals. Having joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023, the England international left the Premier League just 47 goals shy of Alan Shearer’s all-time record. However, with Kane only 31, there is a possibility he could return to the Premier League and break that record, while also adding to his tally of Player of the Month awards.
