All you need to know about FA Trophy

This section will provide you with the most basic knowledge about the FA Trophy to help you easily understand how the game works.

What is FA Trophy?

FA Trophy (the Football Association Challenge Trophy) is a football competition involving plenty of semi-professional English clubs. It is named after the English Football Association. The FA Trophy was founded more than 50 years ago, in 1969, with the Macclesfield Town was victorious in the first season.

How does FA Trophy work?

FA Trophy is a knockout tournament, in which a team will be immediately expelled once they lose a game. The whole competition comprises hundreds of football clubs and numerous rounds before the final match. Currently, there are two preliminary rounds, three qualifying rounds, five rounds proper, quarterfinals, semifinals, and the final round.

Every match is drawn randomly and teams will be divided into regional groups in the qualifying rounds and first round proper to reduce teams’ travel costs.

In case a match is tied, it will be re-played with extra time and penalty shootouts.

Which team is the most successful in the FA Trophy’s history?

The FA Trophy is considered the less competitive tournament because the qualifications and winning abilities among teams participating are shared equally. The proof is the most FA Trophy titles are only three times since its inception, belonging to three clubs: Scarborough, Telford United, and Woking. These teams were the winners of seasons 1973, 1976, 1977; 1971, 1983, 1989; and 1994, 1995, 1997 respectively.
