The arrival of Cole Palmer at Chelsea on the final day of the summer transfer window was a significant move. Interestingly, discussions about Palmer began during negotiations for Mateo Kovacic's transfer to Manchester City in late June.

Kovacic's smooth transfer to City played a vital role in City's willingness to allow Palmer to join their traditional rivals without any last-minute price increases. Initially, Chelsea had concerns about the possibility of Palmer being unable to leave City, especially when Brighton's loan inquiry was rejected by the Premier League champions.

However, the strong relationship between Chelsea's co-sporting directors, Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, and City's director of football, Txiki Begiristain, along with Palmer's desire for more first-team opportunities, changed the situation.

As City's interest in signing Jeremy Doku became apparent, confidence grew within Stamford Bridge, leading to Chelsea finally receiving a price for Palmer. It was then that Palmer expressed his eagerness to make the switch to Chelsea.

After offloading Kai Havertz to Arsenal for a hefty £65 million, Chelsea deemed their acquisition of his replacement for a significantly lower fee of over £20 million as a shrewd move. And so far, it seems to be paying off, as Cole Palmer gears up to face his childhood club for the first time on Sunday.

However, before delving into Palmer's on-field performance, it's worth noting how he has impressed those within Chelsea off the pitch. Despite being born in Wythenshawe, Manchester, and never having lived away from his parents prior to relocating to London, the 21-year-old is keen on learning Spanish. This effort is aimed at enhancing communication with his Chelsea teammates and staff.

When Cole Palmer was initially promoted to the senior squad by Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Raheem Sterling played a crucial role in mentoring him. Sterling took Palmer under his wing, recognizing the young forward's talent after an impressive performance in the Under-18 Premier League, where he scored 15 goals and provided five assists in just 14 games.

As expected, Raheem Sterling provided a highly positive endorsement when Chelsea's recruitment staff asked for his opinion on Cole Palmer. The 28-year-old has been instrumental in helping Palmer settle into his new life in London and adapt to his surroundings at Chelsea.

Recognizing Palmer's leadership qualities, Sterling has witnessed his impact firsthand. Palmer has already taken on the responsibility of penalty-taking at Chelsea, successfully converting all three penalties he has taken. Additionally, he hasn't hesitated to express his thoughts to his teammates, a quality affirmed by Conor Gallagher and Nicolas Jackson.

Palmer's confident demeanor, bordering on arrogance, has been embraced by manager Thomas Tuchel. This was evident in his celebration after equalizing from the penalty spot against Tottenham, where he confidently shushed the opposing crowd.

Cole Palmer possesses the versatility to play in various positions, including as a No. 10, an advanced eight, or even a false nine. While he has predominantly featured on the right side for Chelsea, his ability to drift inside has drawn comparisons to former Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez, who was known for his goal-scoring and playmaking abilities.

Palmer has already accumulated more Premier League minutes at Chelsea than he did throughout his entire City career. However, there is no animosity from Pep Guardiola and Palmer's former club regarding his departure. City insiders still hold him in high regard, describing him as a talented player and a great person who simply desired more opportunities, which should be understandable to the club's fans.

Considering the impressive impact of Jeremy Doku at City, it would be unfair to consider Palmer's departure a mistake. City was well aware of the quality Chelsea was acquiring in Palmer.

Early indications suggest that Chelsea has acquired a player and person in Palmer who exceeds their initial expectations.
