What is Serie A?

How does Serie A work?

As already mentioned, Serie A has been known as a round-robin tournament since 1929. There are 20 clubs joining this football competition, although it has witnessed numerous changes in the number of participants since its founding until the 2004-2005 season, which ended up with 20 teams.

The scoring system is applied in the game to determine the team with the highest point and win the championship. In each match, three points are awarded to the winning team, zero points are given to the losing counterpart, and both of them will obtain one point in case of a tied match. 

Typically, one team that aggregates the most points over the competition will be victorious. However, in fact, there might be more than one team that finished with the highest point. In this situation, the following tiebreaker criteria will be executed:

1. Head-to-head records (results and points) 
2. Goal difference of head-to-head games
3. Goal difference overall
4. Higher number of goals scored
5. Draw 

The top four teams in Serie A will be promoted to the UEFA Champions League, while the bottom three teams are relegated to Serie B.
