Premier League matchweek 8: Big teams all won, struggling Leicester City have not sealed a single victory

After last weekend's fixtures were postponed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the Premier League returned with 7 matches having taken place. Arsenal remained on top after a 3-0 victory over Brenford, while Manchester City and Tottenham continued to put pressure on the Gunners as they thrashed Wolves and Leicester City, respectively.

  1.    Man City and Tottenham continued to put pressure on Arsenal

In this game week, there were three matches rescheduled due to policing demanding ahead of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, including the supper Sunday, Liverpool vs Chelsea, and Man United’s home game against Leeds. However, the remaining top six teams, Man City, Tottenham, and Arsenal, all played this week, and won comfortably.

Man City, with flying form, did not encounter any difficulty to smash Wolves, despite being guests. They easily went ahead after just 55 seconds when Jack Grealish tapped in after Kevin De Bruyne’s cross, before Haaland doubled the lead with a low shot from outside the box. Nathan Collins’ red card in the first half made City’s day easier, and Phil Foden made it 3-0 in the second-half to complete a 3-0 victory for the Citizens.

Tottenham hosted Leicester City in a match a few hours later. Headers from Harry Kane and Eric Dier in the first half, as well as Rodrigo Bentancur's first goal for Tottenham, helped Antonio Conte's side recover from Youri Tielemans' retaken penalty in the sixth minute and James Maddison's magical hooked finish to lead 3-2 early in the second half. After Son Hueng Min came off the bench, the stage belonged to him. The South Korean striker ended his drought in an impressive way, scoring a hattrick in just 14 minutes to help Spurs beat the struggling Foxes 6-2. As for Leicester City, this defeat left them at the bottom of the table with only one point in seven games, putting a lot of pressure on manager Brendan Rodger, who is on the verge of being sacked.

A day after Manchester City had climbed to the top, the Gunners managed to retake that place with a clinical victory at Gtech Community Stadium. William Saliba headed home from Bukayo Saka’s corner to give Arsenal a 1-0 lead, before Brazil forward Gabriel Jesus doubled their lead when he met Granit Xhaka’s beautiful cross. Fabio Vieira marked his first Premier League start with a stunning rocket from distance to make it 3-0 and wrap up three points.

  1.    Fulham, Aston Villa, and Everton secured their wins

Everton got their first victory of the campaign thanks to Neal Maupay’s first goal for the Toffees against struggling Westham, helping them climb to 13th on the standings. West Ham, on the other hand, continued to be immersed in crisis as they are in the regelation zone, despite spending lavishly this summer.

High-flying, newly-promoted Fulham earned their third win of the season as they came from behind to beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 and climb to sixth in the table.

Aston Villa successfully climbed out of the relegation zone as they secured a 1-0 win over Southampton, thanks to Jacob Ramsey’s volley.
