What is the Real Madrid stadium?

The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium is currently the home venue of Real Madrid. The stadium was completed in 1947 with a current seating capacity of 81,044 seats. During the first years, from 1947 to 1955, it was called Estadio Real Madrid Club de Fútbol. It has become the home ground of Real Madrid since its completion and was named after the footballer and former Real Madrid president Santiago Bernabéu.

The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium is located in the district of Chamartín of Madrid and has its own metro station along Line 10 with the same name as the ground. Initially, it had a capacity of 75,145, including only 27,645 seats and 47,500 for standing spectators. Santiago Bernabéu first hosted the match between Real Madrid and Portuguese club Os Belenenses on 14 December 1947, which was a 3-1 home win for Los Bancos.

Real Madrid’s home ground is currently the second-largest stadium in Spain, after Barcelona’s Camp Nou with a capacity of 99,354 seats, and the third-largest home to a top-flight European club after Camp Nou of Barca and Westfalenstadion of Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund

The Santiago Bernabéu Stadium is one of the most famous football stadiums in the world because it has hosted plenty of top-flight competitions, including the final of the UEFA Champions League four times in 1967, 1969, 1980, and 2010, the 2018 Copa Libertadores finals’ second leg, 1964 European’s Nations’ Cup and FIFA World Cup.

Renovation plans that explained why Real Madrid home games were not at Santiago Bernabeu in the UCL

We might notice that Real Madrid didn’t play at the Santiago Bernabeu in their home games in the recent season of the UEFA Champions League. Most of the matches were played behind closed doors, but through media, football fans could recognize it was not the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, but the Alfredo Di Stefano instead.

This was explained by the club president Florentino Perez. He confirmed that their home ground is on a significant redevelopment plan that started at the beginning of June, and was scheduled to finish before the summer of 2022 to welcome a new season 2022-23. However, due to the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic which urged the club to be quicker in their work, the construction of a new stadium might be concluded sooner than expected.

The president also revealed that it would be a totally new and modern stadium for Real Madrid equipped with high technologies like installing a 360-degree screen. There will be an all-new exterior, including a retractable roof that can open to welcome the air when the weather is good and close when it rains or snows.

There are also a new underground car park with 500 spaces expected, next to the old Esquina del Bernabeu shopping center and new restaurants as well. This is considered the first major upgrade on Real Madrid’s home venue since the early 2000s, after several times expanding its capacity.
