Juventus once again became the champion of the 2019-2020 Italy Serie A. The victory last season was the ninth time in a row that this Italian football club brought the Serie A trophy home. What is Serie A?

The format of Serie A

Basically, the format of Serie A is not different from other top-flight football divisions. Although the competition has gone through numerous changes in the number of participants, it eventually ended up with 20 clubs since 2004. 

20 professional Italian football clubs will compete with each other to find out the winner. The round-robin format will take control, thereby, each team will have to join 39 matches in total with the other 19 teams, once at home ground and once at their rival’s home venue. 

The scoring system is applied to determine the champion, who finished the competition with the highest point. By winning a single game, one club can obtain three points, one point for a draw, and zero points for a defeat. In case more than one team finished equally in points, the following criteria to break down the tie will be executed:

1. Head-to-head records (results and points)

2. Goal difference of head-to-head games

3. Goal difference overall

4. Higher number of goals scored

5. Draw

The top four teams will qualify for the UEFA Champions League, while the three clubs at the bottom of the table will be relegated to Serie B- a lower football division in Italy.

It seems that this season of Serie A is not for Juventus despite their dominance in the history of this league. Inter Milan is the favorite team this time with the current top standing in the Serie A table, while Juventus is ten points away and stays in the third rank. 

Antonio Conte, who won Serie A three times with Juventus, now is the coach of Inter Milan. This promises a high opportunity that Inter Milan can lift the Serie A trophy in the 2020-2021 season.
