Aston Villa's qualification for next season's Champions League has been confirmed following Tottenham Hotspur's 2-0 loss against Manchester City. With this result, Aston Villa now holds a five-point lead over fifth-placed Tottenham with one match remaining.

This achievement marks Aston Villa's return to the Champions League for the first time since the 1982-83 season when they secured qualification after winning the 1982 European Cup, defeating Bayern Munich in the final.

Aston Villa ensured that Tottenham needed a victory against City to keep their hopes alive after a dramatic 3-3 draw against Liverpool on Monday. However, City's Erling Haaland netted twice in the second half, securing a 2-0 victory and denying Spurs a place in the Champions League.

Unai Emery, who took over as Villa head coach in October 2022, played a pivotal role in this success. When he joined, Villa was in 16th place in the Premier League, just above the relegation zone. Under Emery's leadership, the team finished the season in seventh place, securing qualification for the Europa Conference League. Now, in his first full season in charge, Emery has guided Aston Villa back to the Champions League after 41 years.

Unai Emery's successful tenure at Aston Villa has been recognized with a contract extension in April, securing his presence at the club until 2027. Villa's ambitious owners, Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, have shown great faith in Emery's leadership abilities.

With an impressive track record in European competitions, including three Europa League titles with Sevilla and one with Villarreal, Emery brought a winning mentality to Villa.

Despite a challenging start to the season with a 5-1 defeat to Newcastle United and the loss of defender Tyrone Mings to a season-ending ACL injury, Villa quickly found their rhythm, winning five of their next six league matches to emerge as contenders for European qualification.

Key victories over Arsenal and Manchester City in December showcased Villa's Champions League aspirations, placing them just three points off the Premier League summit at the halfway mark of the season.

While they couldn't maintain the pace with the league leaders in the second half of the campaign and suffered a setback with a 4-0 loss to European rivals Tottenham in March, Villa remained in the Champions League spots. Notably, they secured another significant win against Arsenal while Tottenham faltered against Fulham, Newcastle, and Chelsea.

Striker Ollie Watkins has been instrumental in Villa's success, leading the goalscoring charts with 19 goals in 36 league appearances, and contributing 13 assists, making him the Premier League player with the highest goal contributions this season.

Villa's season concludes with a match against Crystal Palace on Sunday, where they will look to cap off their impressive campaign on a high note.
