Sir Jim Ratcliffe has instigated money-saving measures at Manchester United.

Six clubs are awaiting the Premier League's findings as disciplinary charges loom for those potentially breaching the league's profit and sustainability rules. The Premier League is set to make its decision on the 2021-2024 accounting period after clubs that reported losses in the first two years of the cycle submitted their financial statements by December 31st. According to The Guardian, the league will issue charges in the coming days after its financial and legal teams are given two weeks to evaluate the accounts of clubs flagged for potential breaches.

Manchester United, Newcastle, Leicester, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, and Everton are under scrutiny. The latter two clubs were charged last year for similar breaches and received point deductions—Everton had four points deducted, and Forest lost two—providing a hint of the penalties that could follow this time.

United doesn't appear to be facing major concerns, having already published their 2023/24 accounts. The club's recent cost-cutting measures and the openness to transfers suggest limited financial flexibility.

Newcastle appeared under pressure last summer, with key players Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson sold late in the accounting period. Anderson’s move to Nottingham Forest was viewed as a "PSR deals" maneuver, as goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos was transferred to Newcastle for £20 million less than a year after joining for just £4 million from Benfica.

Chelsea has remained confident in staying within the profit and sustainability rules, bolstering their finances by selling homegrown players like Lewis Hall, Conor Gallagher, and Ian Maatsen last summer. The club avoided charges last year by selling two Stamford Bridge hotels for £76.5 million to the BlueCo 22 group, which also took ownership of Chelsea's women’s team just before filing their 2023-24 accounts in June.

Leicester are once again facing scrutiny, with the club believed to be under financial pressure. In the 2020-23 period, the Foxes were charged by the Premier League for breaching profit and sustainability rules, but the case was not pursued after an independent commission ruled that Leicester's relegation meant they were no longer a Premier League club when their accounts were submitted.

However, Leicester's loss threshold has now been lowered from £105 million to £83 million following their time in the Championship, which imposes stricter financial limits.

Everton and Nottingham Forest, who were found in breach last season, have little margin for error. Both clubs have taken steps to balance their books. Everton has offloaded players like Lewis Dobbin and Alex Iwobi, while Forest has benefitted from the sale of Brennan Johnson and an increase in commercial income.
