Unai Emery, often regarded as a European football stalwart, faced a challenge from a local contender in the form of Jose Luis Mendilibar, hailing from the same Basque region. Mendilibar, known for his adeptness in steering teams out of trouble, orchestrated a remarkable victory against the high-flying Premier League outfit Aston Villa.

With the aid of Ayoub El Kaabi's hat-trick heroics, Mendilibar's side halted Villa's momentum in the Europa Conference League. The match unfolded as an intense and thrilling affair, showcasing both teams' attacking prowess.

Despite Emery's side displaying resilience, Olympiakos, owned by Evangelos Marinakis, Villa's fellow owner, matched them blow for blow. The encounter exhibited no signs of nerves, with action unfolding from the outset.

Olympiakos, entering the tournament following their Europa League exit, displayed agility and energy. Emery's tactical decision to start Clement Lenglet over Pau Torres added intrigue, but Villa's defense faltered when Chiquinho's clever backheel set up El Kaabi for a scoring opportunity.

El Kaabi approached the chance with the confidence of a seasoned scorer, beating Robin Olsen comfortably with his 30th goal of the season. This goal put Emery's side on the back foot, struggling to regain momentum. When Daniel Podence intercepted a pass on the halfway line, he spotted El Kaabi making another run.

This time, El Kaabi executed a beautifully curved run, receiving Podence's cross with the outside of his left foot. Despite limited time to assess his options, El Kaabi managed to nod the ball past Olsen and slot a left-footed shot into the net.

Villa clawed one back just before halftime, courtesy of Matty Cash's powerful run up the field and a subsequent pass to Moussa Diaby. Watkins capitalized on Diaby's cross-shot, setting up an intriguing second half.

Within six minutes of the restart, Villa leveled the score. Leon Bailey received a superb crossfield pass and found Diaby, whose shot inside the near post caught Olympiakos' goalkeeper off guard.

However, just two minutes after the equalizer, Douglas Luiz conceded a needless penalty by handling the ball in the box. El Kaabi confidently converted the spot-kick, putting Olympiakos back in front.

Maintaining an attacking stance, Olympiakos remained relentless. Their persistence paid off as midfielder Hezze's long-range effort deflected off Ezri Konsa's shoulder, securing their fourth goal as the match approached its conclusion.

Despite the setback, Villa continued to press forward, creating chances. Substitute Jhon Duran was brought down by David Carmo in the box, earning Villa a penalty. Douglas Luiz had the opportunity to redeem himself for his earlier mistake by converting from the spot. However, his shot struck the outside of the post, leaving Villa to lament a night where they were outplayed and taught a harsh lesson.
