10 Best Football Players in the World (2024)

Rodri is widely regarded as the best player in the world right now due to his exceptional performances for both Manchester City and Spain.

Football is an ever-changing meritocracy, making it challenging to decide who the best player in the world is at any given moment. The title can theoretically change hands after any match, depending on an individual's performance. However, allowing opinions to shift so frequently would lead to subjective chaos.

Ranking factors

How do we determine the best player in the beautiful game at this very minute? Our criteria are as follows:

  • Recognised as being world-class: To be considered the best, a player must first and foremost be recognised as a top-tier talent.
  • Well-respected: The player should be established and well-respected within the football community.
  • Consistent: The player must have consistently delivered high-level performances over an extended period.

For those within this elite bracket, it then becomes a matter of clear evidence of impeccable form—whether through goals, assists, clean sheets, or passing the eye test for all-around play. Most importantly, it’s crucial to consider who the performances have been against and in what competition. Additionally, winning silverware is a vital ingredient for these 2024 Ballon d'Or contenders, as it showcases their ability to impact their team’s success.

10. Alisson Becker

Liverpool and Brazil

Alisson is widely acknowledged as one of the top goalkeepers globally and has been instrumental in Liverpool's ongoing pursuit of trophies in recent seasons. His exceptional skills make him a standout, not only as a shot-stopper but also as a commanding presence in the box. He is fearless when coming off his line and adept at distributing passes.

His calmness at the back allows Liverpool to initiate attacks with confidence, knowing they can depend on him in critical situations. Although injuries have affected his second half of the season, Alisson remains undeniably one of the world's best players.

9. Lionel Messi

Inter Miami and Argentina

The Qatar World Cup will forever be Lionel Messi's crowning moment in football, but the greatest footballer ever can no longer be considered the world's best player, mainly because he's now playing for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. This doesn't mean Messi, who turned 37 in June, is incapable of producing magical moments—he still does so regularly with his current club. He deservedly won his record-breaking eighth Ballon d'Or in October for leading Argentina to World Cup glory less than a year earlier.

Will he win a ninth Ballon d'Or this year? It's unlikely, although you wouldn't bet against him if he helps Argentina retain the World Cup in two years' time. There's uncertainty about whether the Barcelona legend will even participate in that tournament, but a significant part of him will undoubtedly want to defend his country's world title. Even at 39, Messi will still be miles better than most professional footballers on the planet, so ruling him out would be unwise.

8. Kevin De Bruyne

Manchester City and Belgium

Kevin De Bruyne missed the first five months of the 2023-24 Premier League season due to injury, but he quickly rediscovered his decisive edge upon his return. The brilliant Belgian helped Man City secure a 3-2 victory over Newcastle at St James' Park, delivering a spectacular goal and a stunning assist.

De Bruyne has the ability to create chances for his teammates effortlessly, placing the ball precisely from almost any position on the pitch. Despite missing a significant portion of the campaign, he managed to rack up over 15 assists across all competitions.

7. Harry Kane

Bayern Munich and England

Harry Kane may still be searching for his first professional trophy—despite reaching five finals—but he earns a spot on this list for one simple reason: he's continued to score goals prolifically since leaving Tottenham for Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023.

In fact, the England international has elevated his game since moving to the Allianz Arena. The 30-year-old is enjoying the most prolific campaign of his career, also contributing a healthy number of assists. The highlight of his season was an incredible wonder-strike from inside his own half against Darmstadt. Unfortunately for Kane, Bayern missed out on Bundesliga glory to Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen and were eliminated from the Champions League by Real Madrid after he had been substituted. From an individual standpoint, the Englishman could hardly have done more during his debut season in Germany.

6. Erling Haaland

Manchester City and Norway

Erling Haaland, who once held the top spot on our list, has dropped a few places due to inconsistent form last season. Despite securing another Premier League Golden Boot with 27 goals, Haaland was surprisingly wasteful in front of goal at times, lacking the sharpness of the previous term.

There may be some debate about the Norwegian striker's overall qualities as a pure footballer, but the notion that City are better off without him lacks substance. Even Roy Keane, who jokingly remarked that Haaland had moments that would make a "League Two player" blush, cannot deny the enduring quality of the Manchester City star.

5. Phil Foden

Manchester City and England

Phil Foden has elevated his game this season under Pep Guardiola's management at Manchester City. The 24-year-old surpassed his previous personal bests for goals and assists, stepping up in De Bruyne's absence and while Haaland struggled, earning him the Premier League Player of the Season award.

As one of the most talented players England has produced in years, Foden has the potential to cement his status as one of the very best of his generation. If he stays grounded, works hard, and remains focused on football, the sky is the limit for this exceptionally gifted attacking midfielder.

4. Jude Bellingham

Real Madrid and England

It's hard to recall any player making as immediate an impact at Real Madrid as Jude Bellingham has this season—especially one who is only 21 years old. Although it was unfortunate that he couldn't end his Borussia Dortmund career with a Bundesliga title, missing out to Bayern Munich on the final day of the campaign, Bellingham marked his debut season in Spain with a La Liga title.

In addition to consistently impressing in the Champions League and contributing goals and assists for England on international duty, Bellingham has remarkably become Real Madrid's primary goalscorer, excelling in a false nine role. While an injury has cooled his hot streak since the turn of the year, he still manages to deliver bright moments. Widely regarded as the best young player in the world, the sky truly is the limit for this English phenomenon.

3. Kylian Mbappe

Real Madrid and France

Kylian Mbappe has concluded his spell with Paris Saint-Germain and is set to begin a new chapter at Real Madrid, having completed a dream move to the Bernabeu this summer. As expected, Mbappe will don the No. 9 shirt in the Spanish capital.

Even though he knew his time at PSG was nearing its end, Mbappe remained focused during the final months of the 2023-24 campaign, once again ranking as the most prolific forward in the French top flight. Although the world-class forward had a disappointing showing for France at Euro 2024, it was largely due to a broken nose he suffered early in the tournament.

2. Vinicius Junior

Real Madrid and Brazil

Vinicius Junior has been pivotal to Real Madrid's recent success with his flair and skill on the wing. Despite a disrupted start to the season due to injury, Vinicius delivered some of his best performances in the latter part of the campaign. He effectively filled the void left by Karim Benzema's summer departure and emerged as one of Madrid's key figures, alongside Jude Bellingham.

Bellingham, during Madrid's La Liga celebrations, praised Vinicius as "the best player in the world," a sentiment that’s hard to contest given Vinicius’s standout performances. Looking ahead, Vinicius will likely aim to lead Brazil to victory in the upcoming Copa America.

1. Rodri

Manchester City and Spain

Defensive midfielders often fly under the radar, but when one receives the Champions League Player of the Season award and ranks fifth in the Ballon d'Or standings, their impact is undeniable. Rodri's performances have been consistently exceptional, but his pivotal role in Manchester City's treble-winning season brought his contributions into the limelight. His decisive goal in the Champions League final, a composed finish from the edge of the box, further highlighted his importance.

Named Player of the Tournament in the 2023 Nations League as Spain clinched the title, Rodri has been outstanding for both club and country in recent seasons. As a leading candidate for the 2024 Ballon d'Or, he continues to deliver remarkable performances and crucial goals for Manchester City.
