Ranking the Top 10 Most Overrated Players in Football

The current landscape of football is filled with talented players who, for various reasons, find themselves struggling to meet the high expectations set for them.
Anna Ciao
By: Anna Ciao

In the realm of football, certain players often fall short of the towering expectations thrust upon them. Whether fairly or not, these individuals are scrutinized against the weight of these anticipations. Numerous factors contribute to a player being labeled as overrated, spanning from failing to live up to initial hype, to not justifying a hefty transfer fee, or merely relying on their established name and reputation.

Football is a realm of diverse perspectives, rendering unanimity unattainable. Nonetheless, the roster has been substantiated by player statistics and the diverse opinions of pundits. Several prominent players continue to divide opinions across the football spectrum - while some segments may deem a player overrated, others may hold them in high regard, sparking ongoing debates.

Ranking factors

Given the nature of this list, certain names below may provoke controversy. However, Betimate will present a compelling case for each player's inclusion, drawing upon statistics and other pertinent findings. The following factors have been taken into account:

  • Expectations: The level of anticipation surrounding the player.
  • Stats: Objective data reflecting their performance.
  • Initial reputation: How they were perceived at the beginning of their career.
  • Success: Their achievements and accomplishments.
  • Perception within the football community: How they are regarded by peers and pundits.

These rankings are not solely based on personal statistics but also on whether each player has fulfilled their potential and whether the weight of expectations has hindered their career progression. Some players may be ranked lower due to their age, leaving room for potential growth and improvement. With these considerations in mind, here is Betimate's assessment of the top 10 most overrated players in the world at present.

10. Alvaro Morata - Atletico Madrid

Alvaro Morata emerged onto the football scene with immense potential, particularly during his early days at Real Madrid. However, the weight of expectations placed on his young shoulders may have been unfair. Despite showcasing glimpses of brilliance, especially in his performances for Real Madrid, Morata has struggled to consistently meet the lofty standards set for him.

As a striker, Morata's primary responsibility is to score goals, yet he has often fallen short in this aspect. Despite having the privilege of playing alongside some of Europe's finest playmakers and for prestigious clubs, Morata has never managed to exceed 15 league goals in a single season.

At 31 years old, Morata finds himself in the twilight of his career without having fully realized his potential. While there is still time for him to make a significant impact in the game, his track record suggests that this may be unlikely.

9. Victor Osimhen - Napoli

When Napoli received a staggering offer exceeding €200 million from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal for Victor Osimhen in the summer of 2023, club president Aurelio De Laurentiis remained unimpressed, likening the offer to the value of just one of Osimhen's feet. Despite the tempting offer, the Nigerian striker opted to stay in Naples. However, since then, he has struggled to replicate the outstanding form he displayed during Napoli's title-winning season.

While Osimhen's dip in form is not unique to him alone, his exceptional individual performance as the Serie A top scorer in the 2022-23 season now seems more like an outlier. Known for his ability to wreak havoc on opposition defenses single-handedly, Osimhen's career has been marred by injuries. Throughout his career, he has only managed to make 30 league starts in a single season once. Undoubtedly, Osimhen possesses undeniable talent, but whether he justifies such a hefty price tag remains a subject of debate.

8. Marcus Rashford - Manchester United

Marcus Rashford emerged onto the football scene with a bang at just 18 years old, netting twice in his debut for Manchester United against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League. The media attention that followed was immense, as is often the case with young prodigies. However, Rashford has struggled to consistently meet the high expectations set for him since then.

Despite flashes of brilliance, Rashford has yet to consistently deliver the goal-scoring numbers many anticipated. He has surpassed the 10-goal mark in the Premier League only four times and has never reached the coveted 20-goal threshold in the competition. These statistics are disappointing for a player once touted for greatness.

At 26, Rashford still has time to fulfill his potential and silence his critics. However, his inconsistency has drawn criticism from various quarters within the footballing world. Whether he can rise to the occasion and meet the lofty expectations set for him remains to be seen.

7. Jordan Henderson - Ajax

Jordan Henderson has been a divisive figure in English football, sparking debates whenever his name is mentioned in an England squad. His time at Liverpool, though filled with trophy success, has left some questioning whether he lived up to the lofty expectations set for him upon his arrival from Sunderland.

Henderson was once heralded as the heir to Steven Gerrard's throne at Anfield, with even the Liverpool legend himself entertaining the notion. However, despite winning eight trophies during his 12-year tenure with the club, Henderson's contributions in terms of goals and assists have been modest. With over 600 appearances to his name, he falls short of the goal-scoring prowess expected of an attacking midfielder.

The constant comparisons to Gerrard may have hindered Henderson's development, preventing him from reaching his full potential. Additionally, his conservative style of play, particularly evident while representing England, has frustrated supporters who believe he is capable of more. Henderson's lack of significant contributions in front of goal has led to questions about his effectiveness in an attacking role and whether he has truly fulfilled his promise.

6. Romelu Lukaku - Roma (on loan from Chelsea)

Romelu Lukaku is a player of contrasting qualities, capable of moments of brilliance and lapses in judgment within the same game. Despite being divisive among fans, he has remained a favorite among club owners, commanding significant transfer fees throughout his career.

Having emerged from Anderlecht's esteemed academy, Lukaku has thrived when not burdened by excessive pressure. Former Everton executive Steve Walsh once cautioned Jose Mourinho about Lukaku's fragile mentality, describing him as a "big baby." However, under the guidance of Antonio Conte at Inter Milan, Lukaku flourished, emerging as Serie A's top scorer.

Chelsea decided to re-sign Lukaku in 2021 for a hefty fee of £97.5 million. However, his return to Stamford Bridge was short-lived, as he struggled to replicate his previous form. Lukaku has since been loaned back to Italy, showcasing the unpredictable nature of his career trajectory.

5. Gianluigi Donnarumma - PSG

Gianluigi Donnarumma's career trajectory has been marked by both accolades and controversies. Since his debut for AC Milan at the age of 16, he has been thrust into the spotlight as one of Italy's most promising goalkeepers. However, his move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 soured his relationship with Milan fans, earning him the moniker 'Dollarumma'.

Despite his success at Euro 2020, where he was named Player of the Tournament, Donnarumma has faced criticism for his performance on the field. His struggles with ball distribution have been particularly evident under PSG coach Luis Enrique's system, leading to doubts about his suitability for the team's style of play.

In a high-profile Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona in April 2024, Donnarumma's errors led to three goals against PSG, drawing widespread criticism. Additionally, the emergence of Guglielmo Vicario at Tottenham Hotspur has raised questions about Donnarumma's position as Italy's first-choice goalkeeper for the upcoming European Championships.

4. Mykhailo Mudryk - Chelsea

Upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge in January 2023, Mudryk became one of the many high-profile signings during Todd Boehly's tenure at Chelsea. At just 21 years old, the Ukrainian forward commanded a staggering £88.5 million transfer fee, placing immense pressure on his young shoulders to deliver results immediately.

Having showcased his talents at Shakhtar Donetsk, Mudryk caught the attention of clubs across the footballing world. However, his statistics failed to match the hype surrounding him. Despite his evident skill, Mudryk struggled to make significant contributions in terms of goals and assists, a trend that has persisted during his time at Chelsea thus far.

Now 22, Mudryk still has ample time to silence his critics and fulfill his potential. Under the management of Mauricio Pochettino, he faces the challenge of elevating his performance and increasing his goal involvements to meet the high expectations set for him. The early stages of his Chelsea career may not have been stellar, but there remains optimism that Mudryk can turn things around and justify his hefty price tag.

3. Antony - Manchester United

Following an impressive stint in the Eredivisie, Antony made a highly anticipated move to Manchester United from Ajax for a significant fee of £82 million. The Brazilian winger arrived with lofty expectations, but unfortunately, he has struggled to live up to them since joining the club.

While the hefty transfer fee is not Antony's fault, it inevitably brings pressure and an expectation to perform at a high level. However, Antony has failed to deliver on these expectations during his time at Manchester United. His flashy dribbling and tricks often result in losing possession, frustrating both supporters and teammates alike.

Furthermore, Antony's tenure at Old Trafford has been overshadowed by off-field allegations, adding to the sense of disappointment surrounding his performance on the pitch. With his struggles continuing, there are growing concerns that Manchester United may opt to move on from him.

Some attribute Antony's struggles to a lack of confidence, as he appears to be a far cry from the player who attracted interest from top clubs while at Ajax. Others suggest that the transition from the Eredivisie to the Premier League has exposed weaknesses in his game, highlighting the significant gap in quality between the two leagues. Regardless of the reason, Antony's time at Manchester United has been marked by underwhelming performances, raising doubts about his future at the club.

2. Joao Felix - Barcelona (on loan from Atletico Madrid)

Joao Felix's journey in football is a tale of unfulfilled potential and missed opportunities. Despite possessing undeniable flair and talent, his career has been marred by a lack of significant contributions to trophy wins.

Starting at Benfica, Felix made headlines with his mesmerizing skills, prompting a record-breaking £111 million move to Atletico Madrid in 2019. However, his time at the Spanish club was marred by a falling-out with manager Diego Simeone, leading to a sour relationship with the club.

Hopes were high for Felix's career trajectory, with many expecting him to ascend to the ranks of the world's best players. However, these expectations have yet to materialize. A brief stint at Chelsea did little to revive his fortunes, and he now finds himself on loan at Barcelona, with no certainty of a permanent move.

The doubts surrounding Felix extend beyond his on-field performance. His attitude has come under scrutiny, tarnishing his reputation and diminishing his market value. Whether he can find stability at a club and consistently showcase his talent remains to be seen. The ball is in Felix's court, and his ability to demonstrate maturity both on and off the pitch will determine his future in football.

1. Neymar - Al-Hilal

Neymar's inclusion as the top entry on this list may raise eyebrows initially, but a closer examination of his career trajectory reveals why he occupies this position. Bursting onto the scene at Santos, Neymar was heralded as the next footballing phenomenon, with lofty comparisons to legends like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Brazilian prodigy faced immense pressure from a young age, with some in Brazilian football circles even predicting he would surpass Pele's legacy. Such sky-high expectations can either propel a player to greatness or weigh them down with unrealistic burdens. While Messi thrived under similar scrutiny, Neymar struggled to consistently deliver on the monumental hype.

Questions surrounding Neymar's attitude and temperament have plagued his career, and his trophy cabinet, considering his talent, remains surprisingly sparse. Despite being one of the most dazzling names in football, Neymar has only won the Champions League once and has just one major international trophy with Brazil, the Confederations Cup in 2013—hardly the illustrious accolades expected of a player compared to Pele.

While Neymar enjoyed a period of consistent success during his time at Barcelona and PSG, there has been a noticeable decline in recent years, with the very best in football maintaining elite levels of performance over extended periods. Neymar's brilliance is undeniable, but his inability to consistently reach the pinnacle of the sport has led many to question whether he has been overrated throughout his career, largely due to the unrealistic expectations set during his early days at Santos.
