League Two explanation

One of the factors that influence a football athlete’s salary is the league he takes part in. Therefore, before checking out how much he could receive in a single tournament, we better deep dive into the league first to truly understand its origin and operation.

What is League Two?

League Two is a short name to call English Football League Two, or Sky Bet League Two, which is a fourth tier in the English football league system. Like other football competitions throughout the nation and continent, League Two is held every year, normally from August to May.

This football tournament actually existed a long time ago, just under different names. It was first called the Football League Fourth Division during 1958-1992, and the Football League Third Division from 1992 to 2004.

How does League Two work?

This round-robin tournament comprises 24 English clubs to bring out the winner after a series of two-legged ties. Each club will have to participate in 46 matches with the other 23 teams, once playing at home and once away.

Ultimately, when all the official games are played, the winner is picked up based on the highest total points obtained. By winning a match, a team will receive three points, one point if it’s a tie and no points for a loss. However, in case there are equal points, the board will decide the champion by other tie-breaker criteria in this order: goal difference, goals scored, and play-off matches as the last resort.

The top three teams and the winner of a series of play-off matches among 4th-7th will be automatically qualified (or called promoted) for League One. In a meantime, two teams at the bottom will be relegated to the National League.

Average League Two players’ salaries

As mentioned above, there are numerous aspects that can affect the wage of a footballer. It will depend on the league, club, player, sponsorship, and so on. Since League Two is a low division compared to the top tier in the English football league system, the average salary is considered quite humble.

The sad news is the official information about the salary of League Two players are almost never revealed. EFL usually denies answering the questions about the wage cap of their clubs. All the figures, which are leaked or collected from the interviews’ responses are average and meant to be referred to. Accordingly, the average wage of a League Two football player is about £60,000 per year, not including incentives or bonuses.

What is the highest paid of a League Two footballer?

So the salary is different among players even in the same club. Per the Daily Mail, the average highest earner is about £114,020 a year,  which means over £2000 per week. For your information, England and Germany usually pay weekly wages for their players. Meanwhile, the lowest wage of a player is just nearly £8000.

Comparison between Premier League salary and League Two salary

The fact is, a player when reaching the Premier League will pocket much more their friend in the fourth tier League Two, about ten times or more per player. For instance, the money that Manchester United has spent on their Premier League goalkeeper David de Gea and the other two players Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial per week (about £915,000) is equivalent to the player wages cap per season (£1 million) of League Two clubs.
