Wedding Gamers: Chinese Couple Breaks Tradition, Transforming Nuptials into an Esports Contest between Bride and Groom

A Chinese couple decided to break away from traditional wedding norms and organized a gaming contest as part of their nuptials. Instead of a typical ceremony, the couple, with the bride named Ning, initiated a League of Legends competition as the groom's wedding party arrived at a hotel room.

In a video that went viral, the bride is seen fully engaged in the game, seated on the bed, while the groom competes with her from the other side of the bed, surrounded by his wedding party.

Ning mentioned that esports played a significant role in their relationship, as her husband was an avid gamer when they first met. Although his interest in gaming waned over time, she continued playing and eventually became more skilled than him.

“Everyone knows that I am good, so they joined together to help him beat me,” said Ning with a smile, adding: “The winner will get lucky money, so even if I end up losing we will both be happy.”

Despite her partner receiving additional assistance, Ning managed to emerge victorious in the gaming contest. The couple's long-standing relationship since secondary school and their shared memories of gaming together served as inspiration for their unique wedding concept.

Their story has garnered significant attention on social media platforms in mainland China, captivating the interest of many people.

One online observer said: “Their wedding is so cool!”

“This is the most civilised wedding scene I’ve seen,” quipped a third person.

The popularity of esports in China remains widespread and continues to grow, even in the face of a challenging regulatory environment.

In a report by CNBC published in July of the previous year, it was revealed that China stood as the largest market for competitive gaming globally, with a remarkable revenue of $403.1 million in esports in 2021. Further data from the Chinese iResearch Consulting Group in 2020 highlighted that the country boasted a staggering 470 million gamers nationwide. These figures underscore the significant presence and growth of the gaming industry in China.
