The Wolves had the better chance, but a brave defensive play by Ezri Konsa on the line prevented Nathan Collins from scoring his first competitive goal in the illustrious gold of the Wolves. That was just a brief respite for Villa, who soon found themselves down when Daniel Podence beat a feeble tackle from Douglas Luiz and curled in a magnificent effort that was out of Emiliano Martnez's grasp.

The eager home crowd was vocal throughout the game and became much louder as Jarred Gillett blew the halftime horn. The second half was significantly slowed down by a flurry of substitutions, but despite needing to press the issue to get back into the game, Villa still appeared more likely to let up a second goal than score an equalizer. With 20 minutes left, one of Wolves' substitutions, Adama Traoré, truly ought to have sealed the victory, but his shot was erratic and harmlessly crossed the crossbar. Ludwig Augustinsson, a Villa substitute, was eager to have an influence on the game as well, and he nearly succeeded admirably when he thundered a volley goal ward that had Sá beat end-to-end. However, Max Kilman cleared the ball off the line to keep his team's slim lead.

That was just a brief respite for Wolves, though, as their defense was ultimately broken when Danny Ings raced through on goal and lofted a shot over the charging Sá to set up a thrilling conclusion to this Midlands derby. In a fiercely contested match, both teams had chances to take the victory, but Villa and Wolves were level after 90 minutes. The Wolves, on the other hand, would be disappointed with a draw since they would have had the potential to win and move up out of the bottom three.
