Top 10 humiliating losses in Premier League history
The Newcastle-Tottenham game was anticipated as a clash for a spot in the top 4, with just a 3-point gap between the two sides in the English Premier League table before kickoff.
However, the game quickly turned into a rout as Newcastle scored five goals within the first 21 minutes, making them the second-fastest team in Premier League history to achieve a 5-0 victory, after Manchester City. Tottenham, though humbled, are not the first team to suffer a humiliating defeat in the Premier League, and they surely won't be the last. In recent seasons, other top-flight clubs such as Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea have also endured such shocking losses.
1. Southampton 0-9 Leicester City
Southampton fans may still remember the match in 2019 when their beloved team hosted Brendan Rodgers' Leicester City. Unfortunately for the home team, the match ended in a devastating defeat, pushing them into the relegation zone.

The visitors opened the scoring early on through a goal from Ben Chilwell. The game took a turn for the worse for Southampton when Ryan Bertrand was sent off just 12 minutes in for a rough tackle on Ayoze Perez.
Southampton 0-9 Leicester City
Leicester City took full advantage of the extra man, and Perez and Jamie Vardy both scored hat-tricks, while Youri Tielemans and James Maddison also found the back of the net.
It was a match that Southampton fans will not forget in a hurry, as they watched their team suffer a humiliating 0-9 defeat at the hands of a ruthless Leicester City side.
2. Middlesbrough 8-1 Man City
Manchester City suffered a disastrous defeat at the hands of Middlesbrough, losing 8-1 in a match that became their worst defeat in 58 years in the English top flight.
Things went from bad to worse for City when Richard Dunne fouled Tuncay, earning a red card and a penalty for Middlesbrough, which Stewart Downing successfully converted. Afonso Alves, who scored all three goals, added a second before halftime.
Middlesbrough 8-1 Man City
The second half was a nightmare for Manchester City as Middlesbrough scored six consecutive goals in just 32 minutes, including one from Jeremie Aliadiere, as well as goals from Downing, Rochemback, and Johnson.
This defeat cost Manchester City a spot in the European Cup and marked the end of coach Sven Goran Eriksson's tenure.
3. Man Utd 8-2 Arsenal
In 2011, Arsenal suffered their worst defeat since 1896, when they were thrashed 8-2 by Manchester United at Old Trafford. Despite missing key players due to injuries and suspensions, this could not explain their loss to the Red Devils.
Danny Welbeck opened the scoring early for United, and Arsenal's hopes of equalizing were dashed when Robin van Persie missed a penalty against David de Gea. Ashley Young scored twice, Wayne Rooney recorded a hat-trick, and Nani and Park Ji-sung also found the back of the net as Manchester United mercilessly crushed Arsene Wenger's team.
Man Utd 8-2 Arsenal
To add insult to injury, Carl Jenkinson was sent off towards the end of the game, leaving Arsenal to play with 10 men and endure further humiliation.
4. Liverpool 7-0 Man Utd
Erik ten Hag's first season in charge of Manchester United was undoubtedly memorable. The Dutch manager led his team to victory in the Carabao Cup but also oversaw poor performances in several matches. One of the worst matches of the season was against arch-rivals Liverpool at Anfield. The pain for United began when Mohamed Salah scored, becoming Liverpool's top scorer in the Premier League.
Liverpool 7-0 Man Utd
Cody Gakpo added another goal for Liverpool just before half-time, and things only got worse for Manchester United in the second half as they conceded six more goals. Darwin Nunez and Salah each scored twice, while Roberto Firmino added a seventh in the final minutes.
Losing to Liverpool is always difficult for United fans, but being decimated 0-7 in such a manner is undoubtedly one of the worst results in the history of the club.
5. Chelsea 6-0 Arsenal
Arsene Wenger had hoped for a special match to celebrate his 1000th game in charge of Arsenal, but instead, he witnessed his team perform poorly at Stamford Bridge.
Within just seven minutes, Samuel Eto'o and Andre Schurrle gave Chelsea a 2-0 lead as Arsenal were caught on the counter and unable to respond. The Gunners' dire situation continued as Kieran Gibbs was mistakenly sent off after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had handled the ball in the penalty area.
Chelsea 6-0 Arsenal
Despite protests from Arsenal players, referee Andre Marriner showed Gibbs a red card, and Hazard scored the subsequent penalty to make it 3-0. Chelsea went on to score three more goals, with Oscar bagging a brace and Mohamed Salah also finding the net to complete the 6-0 thrashing, ruining Wenger's special day.
6. Man City 6-0 Chelsea
Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea side endured a woeful outing at the Etihad Stadium against Sergio Aguero's Manchester City in 2019.
Manchester City scored four goals in the opening 25 minutes to secure the win and inflict a painful defeat on Chelsea. The home side took the lead through Raheem Sterling's easy finish from Kevin De Bruyne's corner. Aguero then scored a stunning volley before adding another goal following Ross Barkley's unfortunate headed clearance.
Man City 6-0 Chelsea
Ilkay Gundogan also got on the scoresheet to make it 4-0, before Cesar Azpilicueta conceded a penalty which allowed Aguero to score his 15th goal against Chelsea. The Chelsea defense made several errors throughout the game and allowed Sterling to score the final goal from close range.
7. Man Utd 1-6 Man City
Sir Alex Ferguson did not experience too many defeats during his illustrious career as the manager of Manchester United, but one stands out in particular - the 2011 match against Manchester City.
It was a match that saw United concede six goals at Old Trafford for the first time since 1930, as Roberto Mancini's City side dominated from start to finish.
Man Utd 1-6 Man City
Mario Balotelli got the party started for City, while United were reduced to 10 men after Jonny Evans was sent off early in the second half. Balotelli added a second in the 60th minute, leaving the 10-man United to watch as Sergio Aguero and David Silva also got on the scoresheet. Edin Dzeko scored twice to seal a historic victory for the visitors.
The sight of empty seats around Old Trafford at the end of the game said it all - it was a humiliating defeat that United fans would want to forget.
8. Newcastle 6-1 Tottenham
Tottenham's new defence was quickly overwhelmed by a resurgent Newcastle United side led by Eddie Howe, who had bounced back strongly from their previous 0-3 defeat to Aston Villa.
The hosts took an early lead with Jacob Murphy scoring just two minutes into the game, followed by Joelinton's goal four minutes later after he slipped past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
Newcastle 6-1 Tottenham
Newcastle continued to dominate as Murphy's long-range shot sailed over Lloris, extending their lead to 3-0 within the first ten minutes of the game. Joe Willock then provided a superb assist with the outside of his boot, allowing Alexander Isak to score his first goal of the game. Isak then scored again in the 21st minute, leaving Tottenham completely stunned by Newcastle's attacking prowess in the first half.
After the break, Harry Kane pulled one back for Tottenham, but substitutes Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson combined to score a sixth goal for Newcastle, handing Cristian Stellini's side a humiliating defeat.
9. Stoke City 6-1 Liverpool
Steven Gerrard's farewell game for Liverpool at Britannia Stadium in 2015 turned into a nightmare as they were beaten by Stoke City. Although Gerrard scored his 710th and final goal for Liverpool, it was only an honorable equalizer as they were completely outplayed by Stoke City.
Stoke City 6-1 Liverpool
Stoke City scored three goals in just eight minutes after half-time, with Mame Biram Diouf scoring twice and Jonathan Walters adding another. Charlie Adam also scored against his former team to make it 4-0, before Steven Nzonzi scored a long-range effort to seal the emphatic victory for Stoke City. Peter Crouch, another former Liverpool player, scored a late goal to add insult to injury for a lackluster Liverpool. The match turned out to be a memorable day for Gerrard, but after the final whistle, the Liverpool legend just wanted to leave the field quickly.
10. Brentford 4-0 Man Utd
Erik ten Hag quickly realized the importance of his mission at Manchester United after witnessing his team suffer a crushing defeat at the hands of Brentford.
Brentford dominated the match, scoring four goals in the first 35 minutes, leaving Ten Hag in disbelief on the touchline. Josh Dasilva opened the scoring with a shot past goalkeeper David de Gea, followed by Mathias Jensen robbing Christian Eriksen and setting up Brentford's second goal.
Brentford 4-0 Man Utd
Ben Mee and Bryan Mbeumo completed Brentford's spectacular display, making it 4-0 and securing a historic win against United. After the game, Ten Hag expressed his anger towards the team and made them run 14 km in practice as punishment for the loss.
