Vinicius Junior, the talented player from Real Madrid and Brazil, became emotional during a press conference for his national team as he opened up about the racist abuse he has endured. This discussion took place ahead of an international friendly match that was specifically arranged to address this issue.

Spain is hosting the match at the Santiago Bernabeu, Vinicius's home stadium at the club level. The game is accompanied by the slogan 'One Skin,' which aims to emphasize the commitment of both federations in combating violence and racism in football, as stated by the Spanish federation (Rfef).

Unfortunately, Vinicius has recently been targeted with further abuse, prompting Real Madrid to file a complaint against a referee after a La Liga fixture. The club alleges that the referee failed to acknowledge the alleged abuse directed at Vinicius in his match report.

As he addressed the upcoming match, Vinicius expressed his growing disillusionment, stating that he was “losing my desire to play” due to the lack of consequences or deterrents for those who subjected him to abuse. Despite this, he made it clear that he had no intentions of leaving Spain and would continue to fight for titles with Real Madrid. Vinicius emphasized that by persevering and succeeding, he would deny the racists the satisfaction they seek.

“I am sure Spain is not a racist country, but there are many racists here and many of them are in stadiums,” he said. “That’s got to change because the people don’t really know what racism is.

“It’s difficult; I’m only 23 years old and I’ve had to tell many Spanish people what racism really is, what affects me and that my family are left at home sad [because of it]. Since the first time [of his experiencing] racism in Spain, in the stadiums things have got worse. Because those who do it aren’t punished, they have more power, they know they can do anything and they know the words they say about the colour of my skin can affect me on the pitch.

“It’s exhausting because you feel like you are alone. I’ve made so many official complaints but no one is ever punished.”

During a match against Valencia last season, Vinicius was sent off after reacting to racist abuse from the opposing fans. Following the incident, Javier Tebas, the head of La Liga, issued an apology for his comments, in which he suggested that Vinicius was not properly informed about the issue and had allowed himself to "be manipulated".

“I can’t have any problem with them [in response]. I only want to play, I just want to feel good and be able to go to every stadium in Spain with peace and that nobody can upset me because of the colour of my skin,” Brazillian winger said.

Vinicius featured in the lineup against England last week and will earn his 28th senior cap if he participates in the match against Spain.
