Why La Liga has yet to adopt goal-line technology: An Explanation

In El Clasico, Barcelona had a goal controversially disallowed due to the lack of goal-line technology in La Liga.

Andreas Christensen put Barcelona ahead in the sixth minute, but Vinicius Jr. equalized for his team from the penalty spot. In the 28th minute, there was controversy when Lamine Yamal's flick from Raphinha's corner appeared to cross the line before Andrey Lunin cleared it. Despite VAR checking the incident from multiple angles, only a corner was awarded to the Catalan side.

Leading up to the 2023/24 season, it was revealed by El Larguero that La Liga would remain the only major European league without goal-line technology, as president Javier Tebas reportedly refused to pay the £2.6 million ($3.2m) required for its implementation.

In response to criticism from Barcelona fans regarding the absence of goal-line technology, Tebas took to social media to defend his stance. He shared a series of past incidents where goal-line technology had been proven incorrect, adding the caption "no comment."

The Premier League set the precedent by implementing goal-line technology in 2014, a move inspired by Frank Lampard's disallowed goal against Germany in the 2010 World Cup. Following suit, the Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Serie A, and Eredivisie all adopted the technology by 2015, aligning with the English league's decision.

Next, Barcelona will take to the field on April 29th in a crucial league encounter against Valencia at home.
