Examining the Longest Winless Streaks in Premier League History

There are clubs that have endured a considerable stretch of games without securing a single victory for over half a season.

The Premier League stands tall as the wealthiest, most popular, and highest-quality top-flight league in global football. Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, has even asserted that winning the English top division is more challenging than lifting the Champions League, the ultimate prize in European club football.

However, not every team that has graced the Premier League can claim an elite status. Securing a victory against such high-caliber opposition, especially in a league where teams like Guardiola's dominant City are just one of many incredible sides, is an immensely difficult task. Weeks between triumphs can swiftly turn into months. Let's take a look at the clubs that have experienced the longest winless streaks in the history of the competition.

Mick McCarthy, with over two decades of managerial experience and overseeing more than 650 matches, encountered an unprecedented situation when the chairman of his club, Steve Morgan, entered the sanctity of the dressing room uninvited. This occurred after Wolverhampton Wanderers suffered a lackluster 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool in January 2012.

McCarthy, mindful of not openly criticizing his superior, subtly hinted at his negative perception of the incident. The seasoned former Republic of Ireland international jokingly suggested that he should pursue "a sensible job as a window cleaner or an insurance salesman." However, Morgan's outburst only brought about a brief improvement before McCarthy was ultimately sacked within two weeks. The team soon faced relegation, and it took another six years under the management of Nuno Espirito Santo for Wolves to secure their next Premier League victory.

Queens Park Rangers' dismal run of 17 matches without a victory began in a surreal setting. On the final day of the 2011/2012 season, Sergio Aguero scored a memorable stoppage-time winner for Manchester City against QPR, securing the Premier League title. QPR managed to avoid relegation thanks to a draw between Bolton Wanderers and Stoke City, resulting in the entire Etihad Stadium erupting with jubilation at the final whistle.

Manager Mark Hughes boldly declared that his team would not find themselves in a similar situation again during his tenure. However, Hughes was sacked before QPR could secure another league win. The team's struggles continued into the following season, as they failed to claim three points in any of their first 16 matches, ultimately leading to their relegation.

The sense of betrayal still weighed heavily on Dave Bassett. Even two decades after managing Nottingham Forest during their disastrous start to the 1998/1999 Premier League season, Bassett claimed that he had been "betrayed by the club's directors." This feeling of betrayal stemmed from the decision to sell striker Kevin Campbell to Trabzonspor before the start of the campaign, which left Bassett feeling abandoned.

Although Dutch forward Pierre van Hooijdonk remained at the club, he effectively went on strike as he felt his demands for player recruitment were not being met. Bassett was eventually replaced by Ron Atkinson in January. In Atkinson's second game in charge, he successfully halted the team's losing streak and secured a 1-0 victory over Everton, with the winning goal scored by none other than the returning Van Hooijdonk. The charismatic new manager's arrival brought a glimmer of hope amidst the turmoil.

Tim Sherwood experienced the opening day of a season as a manager for the first time in his career. Aston Villa managed to secure a narrow victory against newly promoted Bournemouth in a vibrant and celebratory atmosphere on the sun-soaked south coast. This would turn out to be the club's final league win of the entire calendar year.

In November, Remi Garde replaced Sherwood as Villa's manager, but he struggled to assert his authority over the squad. Micah Richards, the team's captain at the time, recalled stifling laughter during Garde's team talks and went on to label him as "the worst manager" he had ever encountered. Richards gave a scathing assessment, stating that Garde "brought absolutely nothing" to the team. However, Garde did manage to put an end to Villa's winless streak by securing a determined victory over Crystal Palace, a match in which he dropped six players, including Richards himself.

The 2017/2018 season saw West Bromwich Albion achieve their best start to a top-flight campaign in nearly forty years, securing consecutive victories. However, their fortunes took a drastic turn as the club underwent significant changes, including the sacking of their chairman, CEO, and two managers before Easter.

Although West Brom had a prolonged period of five months without a win, they were not as abysmal as some other teams on this unfortunate list. During this winless stretch, they managed to avoid defeat in half of their matches, with only three clubs losing more games over the same period. According to UnderStat's expected goals (xG) model, which assesses the quality and quantity of shots rather than actual goals scored, West Brom's performance indicated that they were creating and conceding chances that would typically warrant a mid-table position. Unfortunately, luck was not on their side, as they ultimately finished 20th in the league standings.

Despite finishing the 2019/2020 season with three consecutive defeats, Sheffield United still found themselves in the top half of the table, just two points behind Arsenal. The Blades had made a larger net spend in the summer transfer window than Manchester United or the newly crowned champions Liverpool. However, despite their investment, they struggled to secure victories in the following season.

It took until mid-January, after 20 games and 18 defeats, for Sheffield United to finally claim all three points. In a match against Newcastle United, they held on for a narrow victory, with the opposing team almost scoring a late equalizer. Chris Wilder, the manager, expressed visible relief and half-jokingly mentioned that he was even contemplating taking up another sport if they had thrown away the win in added time.

Daniel Farke's luck had finally run out. The softly spoken German coach was given permission to take Norwich City down in 2020 after achieving promotion to the Premier League, a feat he would replicate immediately. However, Farke had to wait 11 games to secure the club's first top-flight victory in the 2021/2022 season. Just hours after ending the 20-game winless streak, Farke's tenure as manager in Norfolk came to an end.

During this goalless period, Norwich managed to score a meager four goals. In comparison, over the same period (excluding their time in the second tier), 31 different players from other clubs outscored the entire Norwich team. To put it into perspective, Liverpool's Mohamed Salah had only four shots on target less than Norwich managed to score throughout that winless stretch.

Norwich City experienced a remarkable rise and fall in their early years in the Premier League. During the league's inaugural season, they spent a total of 105 days at the top of the table, nearly double the amount of time that eventual champions Manchester United spent in first place. However, within two years, Norwich had plummeted down the league standings.

Their fortunes took a turn for the worse in the 1994/1995 season, as they suffered seven consecutive defeats, leading to their relegation to the second tier. Norwich remained in the Championship for nine seasons before Nigel Worthington led them back to the Premier League in 2004. Despite their return, it took them 13 games to secure their first win of the campaign. Worthington reportedly showed the squad a motivational video during training, which helped inspire them to defeat Southampton. However, their struggles continued, and Norwich were ultimately relegated again in May of that season.

In desperate need of salvation in October 2002, Sunderland turned to Howard Wilkinson as their manager. Wilkinson, a manager with top-flight success in the past, led the Black Cats to a surprising victory over Liverpool at the start of his tenure. Reflecting on the win, Wilkinson expressed hope that it would mark the beginning of a positive run for the team. Unfortunately, it turned out to be quite the opposite.

Following their victory over Liverpool, Sunderland went on a dismal run and failed to win any of their subsequent 26 Premier League games. In a desperate attempt to turn things around, Wilkinson was eventually replaced by Mick McCarthy. However, the impending doom could not be stopped, and Sunderland's winless streak included a record-breaking 20 consecutive defeats. One of the low points came in a 3-1 loss at home to Charlton Athletic, which was defined by an unfortunate trio of own goals.

Derby County holds the unfortunate distinction of being the only club in Premier League history to have their relegation confirmed as early as March. Despite this, their manager Paul Jewell maintained that the relegation had been "inevitable for a while." The 2007/2008 season for Derby County was a dismal one, as they finished with a mere 11 points, making it the worst season ever seen in England's top flight.

Under the captaincy of Robbie Savage, the team managed to secure just one victory throughout the entire season. Even that lone win, with Kenny Miller scoring the winning goal against Newcastle United, was missed by live broadcasters who opted to show a replay instead. Jewell had taken on the managerial job at Derby County, despite being warned by Everton's David Moyes that he was stepping into a sinking ship. Initially, Jewell laughed off Moyes' warning, but he later admitted that it had turned out to be true.
