Since its inception in 1992, the Premier League has become the most prestigious and widely viewed football league globally. This status is due in large part to the presence of some of the world's top players in each of the 20 teams that compete at the highest level of English football every season.

Although football is a team sport, individual players can still shine and receive recognition for their exceptional performances. While outfield players have historically dominated awards ceremonies, goalkeepers now have their moment to be acknowledged thanks to the Premier League Golden Glove. Introduced in 2005, this award is given to the goalkeeper who records the most clean sheets in a season.

The list of Golden Glove winners features numerous legendary figures—only the best keepers from the most successful teams have achieved top results at the end of each season. Here’s a detailed look at the 10 Golden Glove winners, from those with a single win to the most decorated players in this category.

10. Edwin van der Sar

2009

Few goalkeepers have had a season as remarkable as Edwin van der Sar's 2008/09 campaign. Not only did he surpass Petr Čech’s record for consecutive clean sheets—set at 10 during the 2004/05 season—but he also shattered the all-time British league record. Between November and February, Van der Sar went an incredible 1,311 consecutive minutes without conceding a single league goal.

As a pivotal figure in Manchester United's 11th Premier League title win, the Dutch international earned accolades such as Best European Goalkeeper and a spot in the PFA Team of the Year. Despite these honors, he might have traded them for a victory in that year's Champions League final, where his team fell to Barcelona in one of the competition’s most unforgettable matches.

9. Wojciech Szczesny

2014

Emerging as Arsenal's great hope at the turn of the 21st century, Wojciech Szczesny quickly earned Arsène Wenger's trust as a teenager and reached his peak with the Gunners in his early 20s. The Polish goalkeeper had an outstanding 2013/14 season, securing the Premier League Golden Glove award and winning the FA Cup.

However, Szczesny spent only one more season at Arsenal, losing his starting spot midway through the 2014/15 campaign to new signing David Ospina. While Ospina failed to make a significant impact in north London, Szczesny reinvented himself in Serie A, first impressing with Roma and later taking over from the legendary Gianluigi Buffon at Juventus.

8. Thibaut Courtois

2017

Taking over from a goalkeeper of Petr Čech's caliber, who had already won the Golden Glove award three times, was no easy feat for Thibaut Courtois. However, the Belgian goalkeeper rose to the challenge.

During his four seasons at Stamford Bridge, the former Atlético Madrid star solidified his reputation as one of the world's top goalkeepers, securing the Golden Glove at the end of the 2016/17 season. His 16 clean sheets played a crucial role in Chelsea's league title win, supported by Antonio Conte's formidable five-man defense, which conceded just 28 goals over the course of 38 league games.

7. David Raya

2024

David Raya's arrival at Arsenal in the summer of 2023 was a major talking point. While many questioned the need for the Spaniard's recruitment from Brentford, given Aaron Ramsdale's impressive performances the previous season, Mikel Arteta had a different perspective. The new arrival's debut season proved Arteta right.

At 28, Raya quickly established himself as Arsenal's number one goalkeeper. Succeeding his compatriot David de Gea as the Premier League Golden Glove winner, Raya notched 16 clean sheets in 32 appearances. His efforts were instrumental in helping Arsenal secure the league's tightest defense, conceding only 29 goals throughout the campaign.

6. David de Gea

2018, 2023

Surprisingly, and perhaps bafflingly, David de Gea spent the year following his second Premier League Golden Glove win without a club. The Spaniard's shot-stopping prowess in the 2022/23 season helped Manchester United secure third place in the league, conceding just 43 goals. This was a notable achievement, mirroring his performance in 2018, when he kept his goal intact 18 times.

Erik ten Hag's decision to part ways with De Gea wasn't due to his shot-stopping ability—an aspect of his game that was rarely questioned. Instead, the Dutch coach grew increasingly concerned about De Gea's struggles with playing out from the back. In the modern game, maintaining clean sheets alone is no longer sufficient.

5. Alisson

2019, 2022

Alisson, who had already delivered standout performances for AS Roma, joined Liverpool with a clear goal of restoring the club to its former glory. He achieved this goal right away, setting a record for the most clean sheets in his debut Premier League season with 21.

This impressive feat earned him the Golden Glove in 2019, the same year he played a crucial role in Liverpool's Champions League victory. Three years later, despite his team finishing second in the league, Alisson was once again honored as the best goalkeeper, thanks to his 20 clean sheets during the season.

4. Pepe Reina

2006, 2007, 2008

Few players have adapted to the Premier League as seamlessly as Pepe Reina. After his transfer from Villarreal to Liverpool in the summer of 2005, the goalkeeper, hailed as Spain's best by Rafael Benítez, quickly made his presence felt.

Reina won the Golden Glove in 2006 and successfully defended his title the following year, becoming the first goalkeeper to win the award in consecutive seasons. Not stopping there, the Madrid-born keeper recorded 18 clean sheets in 2008. In 2010, despite matching Petr Čech's number of shutouts, Reina missed out on a fourth title due to Čech’s superior goals conceded record.

3. Ederson

2020, 2021, 2022

Manchester City’s recent dominance in the English top flight owes much to Ederson. The Brazilian goalkeeper, who was crowned Golden Glove winner three times in a row from 2020 to 2022, has consistently justified Pep Guardiola's trust. Remarkably, Ederson has only improved over time.

After achieving 16 clean sheets in the 2019/20 season, he surpassed this with 19 shutouts in 2021 and then set a new personal best with 20 clean sheets the following year. He also recorded 20 clean sheets at the end of the 2018/19 season, though he still finished behind his compatriot, Alisson.

2. Petr Cech

2005, 2010, 2014, 2016

Summarizing Petr Čech's career in just a few lines feels almost inadequate. As a true Premier League legend, his exceptional performances have elevated both Chelsea and Arsenal.

Čech will be remembered as the inaugural Golden Glove winner, thanks to his record 24 clean sheets during the 2004/05 season, which helped Chelsea secure their second-ever English title, 50 years after their previous triumph. This was the first of his four Golden Glove awards, with subsequent wins in 2010—when Chelsea claimed their fourth league title (following their third in 2006)—and again in 2014 and 2016, after joining Arsenal.

1. Joe Hart

2011, 2012, 2013, 2015

Joe Hart is undoubtedly one of the Premier League’s greatest goalkeepers. An iconic figure for Manchester City, with whom he secured two league titles, Hart won the Golden Glove four times within five years—a remarkable feat unmatched by any other goalkeeper in history.

One of Hart’s most memorable performances was his series of impressive saves against Barcelona in the Champions League, which even earned him the praise of Lionel Messi, who called him a "phenomenon." This recognition was the culmination of a career marked by resilience, as Hart endured several loan spells before firmly establishing himself as Manchester City's undisputed number one.
