Unlike football clubs, ranking national teams is challenging due to differences in timing, competitiveness, and quality among continental tournaments apart from the FIFA World Cup. Major international tournaments can significantly impact a country's ranking.

Therefore, the FIFA Rankings serve as the most reliable source for assessing football national teams. Introduced in December 1992, these rankings assign points based on teams' performance, with the most successful teams ranked highest.

In this article, Betimate presents the top 10 best national football teams in the world for 2024. Please note that while FIFA rankings are a primary factor, other considerations also influence this list of the world's top national soccer teams.

1. Argentina

In recent years, Argentina's national team, led by Lionel Messi, has demonstrated that individual brilliance alone cannot secure titles.

The current Albiceleste squad features key players like Lionel Messi, Otamendi, Marcus Acuña, Giovanni Lo Celso, Enzo Fernández, Julián Álvarez, Alexis Mac Allister, Lautaro Martínez, and Nico González.

Despite enduring heartbreaks over the past decade, Argentina achieved triumph by winning both the Copa America and the Finalissima last year.

The pinnacle of their recent success came with a resounding victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar.

Argentina stands among the world's most decorated footballing nations, boasting an impressive tally of trophies.

2. France

The 2018 world champions boast a formidable lineup that could field three or four distinct starting elevens from their deep pool of talented stars, all capable of making a significant impact in international tournaments.

Featuring stars such as Karim Benzema, Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembele, Randal Kolo Muani, Eduardo Camavinga, Antoine Griezmann, William Saliba, and others, France presents a formidable challenge for any opponent.

In addition to these established players, France also benefits from emerging talents like Jules Koundé, Marcus Thuram, and Khéphren Thuram.

Looking ahead, Les Bleus aim to capture their first European Championship title in 2024.

France has long been a powerhouse in world soccer, consistently showcasing strong performances over many years.

3. Belgium

Belgium's current national team represents their golden generation, boasting a squad rich in talent across every position on the field.

After a disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign, Belgium is in a phase of gradual rebuilding under new coach Domenico Tedesco.

Under Tedesco's guidance, Belgium has shown significant improvement.

Their best tournament achievements include a third-place finish at the 2018 World Cup and runners-up at the 1980 European Championship.

Consistently ranked among the top teams in international football, Belgium reached their peak FIFA ranking of #1 in November 2015.

4. England

The current England national team squad features a wealth of talent, blending experienced players with promising youngsters.

Under Gareth Southgate's guidance, the Three Lions reached the semi-finals of the last World Cup in Russia and were finalists in the European Championships last year.

Looking ahead, England aims to push further and secure victory in Euros 2024.

England boasts a prestigious World Cup title, which they claimed in 1966.

In addition to their established stars, England's roster includes several emerging talents. Notable among them are midfielder Jude Bellingham, alongside promising players like Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Declan Rice, and Phil Foden.

5. Brazil

Brazil stands as the most successful nation in international football history, boasting a record five FIFA World Cup titles.

Throughout its storied legacy, Brazil has produced some of the sport's greatest icons.

Today, the Seleção features a blend of seasoned veterans and rising stars, including Neymar, Rodrygo, Richarlison, Alisson, Gabriel Jesus, Marquinhos, Casemiro, and Vinicius Junior.

Renowned for its dominance on the global stage, Brazil continues to pursue glory in the ongoing 2024 Copa America in the United States, navigating challenges from formidable South American and North American opponents.

6. Portugal

Portugal's national football team has enjoyed significant success in recent years, highlighted by their triumph in the 2016 European Championship and strong showings in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, reaching the round of 16 each time. They also claimed victory in the 2019 UEFA Nations League.

Led by their star player Cristiano Ronaldo, widely regarded as one of the world's best, Portugal boasts a roster rich with talent including Bernardo Silva, João Felix, Ruben Neves, Ruben Dias, and Bruno Fernandes.

Under the guidance of former Belgium coach Roberto Martinez, Portugal has shown defensive resilience and continues to strive for excellence on the international stage.

7. Netherlands

The Netherlands, despite being a relatively modest-sized European nation, boasts a rich footballing heritage and a current squad capable of competing at the highest levels. Key players like Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong, Memphis Depay, and Matthijs de Ligt make them formidable opponents on the international stage.

Historically, the Dutch are known for causing major upsets in tournaments while also struggling under pressure at times. Currently guided by former Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman, the Netherlands ranks as the 7th best national team in the world.

They also feature promising talents such as Jeremie Frimpong, Xavi Simons, Nathan Aké, Joshua Zirkzee, and Ian Maatsen, adding depth and potential to their squad.

8. Spain

Spain endured a heartbreaking exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup at the hands of Morocco. Despite this setback, they remain one of the elite teams in international football, with their 2008-2012 squad widely regarded as one of the best in soccer history.

While La Roja may not be at the same peak as a decade ago, coach Luis de la Fuente still commands a squad brimming with talent, making them formidable opponents in any match.

Spain's current roster boasts a blend of experienced players and emerging stars. Among the promising young talents are Pedri, Gavi, Alvaro Morata, Dani Olmo, Rodri, and Alejandro Balde.

Additionally, capturing attention is 16-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal, who has emerged as a standout figure for the team.

9. Italy

Roberto Mancini has been assembling an exciting squad since taking charge, blending young, talented players with seasoned veterans.

Italy's roster boasts several standout names, including Ciro Immobile, Lorenzo Insigne, Marco Verratti, Nicolo Barella, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Jorginho.

Despite a dramatic decline following their 2006 World Cup triumph, Italy staged a remarkable resurgence by clinching the 2021 Euros. However, their journey to the subsequent World Cup was abruptly halted with a shocking elimination by Northern Macedonia in the qualifiers.

Nevertheless, Italy maintains its stature as one of the world's top footballing nations, currently ranked 9th in the latest FIFA World rankings.

10. Croatia

Croatia's current national football team has excelled in recent years, highlighted by their journey to the 2018 World Cup final where they finished as runners-up. They also reached the knockout stages of the 2020 European Championship and secured a third-place finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Under the guidance of coach Zlatko Dalić, who orchestrated their historic World Cup campaign, Croatia has maintained a formidable presence on the international stage. The team boasts a roster of talented players such as Luka Modrić, Ante Rebić, Ivan Perišić, Mateo Brozović, and Mateo Kovačić.

Known for their robust midfield and technical prowess, the Croatians have consistently challenged some of the world's top teams. Their recent achievements and the quality of their squad cement Croatia's status as one of the premier national soccer teams globally.
