Julen Lopetegui

Sevilla is the oldest football club in Spain, with more than 130 years of existence. Therefore, within this period of time, there have been a total of 60 head coaches from different countries in Europe. Many managers had intermittent periods working with Sevilla. For example, former Spanish coach Diego Villalonga Diego Villalonga was the manager of the club four times, but not continuously. Ramón Encinas was the first and only manager that helped Sevilla win their only La Liga title so far.

Julen Lopetegui- the current manager

This Spanish football manager has become the coach of La Liga club Sevilla at the end of the 2018-19 season. On 5 June 2019, he was appointed to be the new manager of this club to replace Joaquín Caparrós. His contract was initially meant to last for three years. However, in early 2021, he decided to extend the deal for two more years.

Manager Julen Lopetegui

Julen used to be a goalkeeper for numerous top-flight clubs in Spain, such as Real Madrid in the 1988-89 season, and won the prestigious La Liga, or Barca from 1994 to 1997. In 2003, he started his managerial career by becoming a football assistant for the full-time coach Juan Santisteban for the U17 squad of the Spain national football team.

During this coaching career, he also managed other Spanish youth teams, from U19 to U21, and the senior squad for two seasons. He had a short time working with Spanish clubs, usually within a season before leaving. Julen was the manager of Rayo Vallecano in 2008, Real Madrid B in 2008-2009, Porto in the period of 2014-2016, and Real Madrid in 2018 before moving to Sevilla.

He had such an impressive debut at Sevilla. In the 2019-20 La Liga, also the first year of Julen Lopetegui, he helped the club to finish fourth, meaning they got a certain berth to qualify for the 2020-21 Champions League. In the group stage, they were placed in Group E with Chelsea, Krasnodar, and Rennes, and together with Chelsea advanced to the knockout phase. Unfortunately, in the next stage, Sevilla lost after two-legged ties against Borussia Dortmund

They proudly won the 2019-20 UEFA Europa League by surpassing Inter Milan by a final 3-2 win. This was also his first club honor with this club. Until now, Julen has helped Sevilla win a total of 66 matches out of 109 games in different tournaments, with a winning percentage of 60.55%.
