Atalanta FC results 2021-22: The club stand in top positions in Serie A

Preseason

Atalanta B.C. had a relatively successful preseason three wins and one draw out of six friendly games. They started the 2021-22 preseason with a big win against Albinogandino FC. Atalanta scored 13 goals without conceding any goal. Two days later, they had a friendly against Israeli club Maccabi Bnei Raina and ended up with a 1-1 draw. 

Another big win was a match against Alessandria with a 7-1 result. They were defeated by two top-flight European clubs West Ham United in the Betway Cup and another game by Juventus in the middle of August.

Overall

Atalanta has never won the Serie A or the Champions League. They also had a long time playing in the lower division, Serie B and won the Coppa Italia only one time in the 1962-63 season. However, since the 2016-17 season to the present, Atalanta has always been at the top of the Serie A to qualify for the next season of the Champions League.

The club is currently standing fourth in the 2021-22 Serie A league table with 22 points, three points lower than the third-placed club Internazionale. Within their 12 Serie A games so far, Gian Piero Gasperini’s students have won half, drew four, and lost in two matches. 

They even surpassed some top-notch clubs like Roma or Juventus in this season of Serie A. Atalanta witnessed the only two losses in two home games against Fiorentina and Milan, but with only one goal difference. 

In the match with A.C. Milan, the club was led with three goals from the opponent. Davide Calabria scored right in the very first minute of the game, followed by Sandro Tonali in the 42nd minute and Rafael Leao in the 78th minute. It was thought to be a big regretful home loss for Atalanta, but they rose up in the last minutes of the game and even posed a threat to the visitors. 

Atalanta was awarded a penalty and thanks to Duvan Zapata, they nailed it in the 86th minute. In the fourth minute of the extra time, Mario Pasalic scored the ending goal of the game, shortening the difference between the scores of the two clubs.

The biggest win of the club so far was a match against Empoli on 17 Oct and they were the visitors this time. Empoli was defeated with a 1-4 loss to Atalanta. After the first half, the result was 2-1 to Atalanta with Josip Ilicic scoring two goals in the 11st and 26th minutes. Federico Di Francesco from the home side scored the only goal for Empoli in the 30th minute. 

In the first minutes of the second half, Mattia Viti had his own goal, and Atalanta, therefore, obtained another goal for their club. Top goalscorer Duvan Zapata was the player who scored the last goal for Atalanta, increasing the result to 4-1 for the away club.

In the European arena, Atalanta is included in the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League by finishing third in the previous season of Serie A. They have won one out of four Champions League group stage games, ranking third in Group F, after the Red Devils and Villarreal. 

The Colombian striker Duván Zapata is currently the top goalscorer of Atalanta with seven Serie A goals and one Champions League goal.
