Aston Villa fans are convinced Emi Martinez is leaving the club after looking emotional following their 2-0 win over Tottenham.

Aston Villa supporters are increasingly convinced that Emiliano Martinez could be on his way out of the club this summer, after the goalkeeper appeared emotional during the team's final home game of the season. Following Villa's crucial 2-0 win over Tottenham, Martinez was seen applauding the fans with tears in his eyes, sparking speculation that he may have been bidding farewell.

The emotional moment has fueled rumours of a potential move, with several fans interpreting his reaction as a goodbye—especially amid ongoing links to Saudi Pro League clubs.

One fan posted on social media: “It’s the greatest shame that Emi Martinez is obviously going to Saudi at the end of the season. Burst out crying once he clapped the fans. It’s been a privilege and an honour and I hope he somehow doesn’t leave. The world’s Number 1!”

Another added: “Replacing Emi Martinez would be a massive task if he is leaving. The best GK I’ve ever seen play for Villa, and it’s not even close.”

A third fan shared: “Emi Martínez is my favourite Villa player ever. Only James Chester comes remotely close. The man has embodied everything I want in an Aston Villa player. I beg this is not the end.”

Reports suggest Villa are open to selling the Argentina international, particularly after building strong ties with the Saudi Pro League through Jhon Duran’s January move to Al-Nassr. Espanyol’s Joan Garcia has emerged as a possible successor, though Arsenal are also reportedly monitoring the situation.

Martinez has never been far from controversy throughout his career. He drew the ire of French fans by mocking Kylian Mbappe in the aftermath of Argentina's 2022 World Cup triumph and reignited tensions during Aston Villa's Champions League trip to Paris this season.

The experienced goalkeeper stirred the pot by wearing a cap referencing France’s loss to Argentina, provoking a strong reaction from PSG supporters. Despite the backlash in the French press, Villa boss Unai Emery stood firmly by his goalkeeper amid the fallout.

"He is mature," he said. "He is responsible. He is getting better at controlling his emotions. I was working with him in Arsenal as well, before I arrived here in Aston Villa.

"I think compared with when he arrived at Aston Villa five years ago and now, he is a different Emiliano. I think he is more mature. He is a better player, a better goalkeeper and now my conversation with him is always the same. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world - he got the award for it here in Paris."
