According to talkSPORT, an official announcement regarding the appointment of Richard Hughes as Liverpool's sporting director could be made on Wednesday. This decision is part of a broader restructuring plan led by Michael Edwards, who is poised to return to the club as CEO.

Richard Hughes, a former Scotland international, will leave his position as Bournemouth's sporting director to join Liverpool at the end of the season. Hughes embarked on a career in football administration after retiring from professional football, initially joining Bournemouth's recruitment team under the guidance of Eddie Howe. As a result of his insightful contributions, Hughes was subsequently promoted to the role of technical director during the club's time in the Premier League.

Liverpool have been without a permanent sporting director since Julian Ward's departure last summer. In the interim, the club sought the assistance of German football executive Jordi Schmadtke to support Jurgen Klopp during the summer transfer window. This collaboration resulted in notable signings such as Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch.

Richard Hughes brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having enjoyed a distinguished career in both playing and administrative capacities. He began his professional journey at Arsenal, although he did not make any senior appearances for the club. Hughes then joined Bournemouth in 1998, spending four years there before making a move to Portsmouth on the south coast.

During his time at Fratton Park, Hughes earned five caps for the Scotland national team and made an impressive 114 appearances in the Premier League over a span of nine years. In 2012, he returned to Bournemouth before retiring from professional football in 2014, thus concluding a successful and illustrious career.

As Liverpool looks to navigate the transition following the departure of legendary manager Jurgen Klopp, Richard Hughes will assume a crucial role in shaping the club's future squad. Working closely with newly appointed CEO of football operations, Michael Edwards, Hughes will play a pivotal part in the club's strategic direction. With these key appointments in place, Liverpool fans are eagerly anticipating the impact they will have in shaping the club's trajectory both on and off the field as they embark on a new era.
