Arsenal were clearly the prematch favorites to win after winning both of their previous two-leg EU matches against Portuguese clubs, but they were dealt a blow when defender Takehiro Tomiyasu was forced out and replaced by Ben White. The current Premier League leaders, however, were unfazed by this, and they went ahead at the 19-minute mark when acting captain Granit Xhaka scored on the rebound after Gabriel Martinelli's shot was saved.

Just two minutes later, however, another injury ended Arsenal's promising start. This time, William Saliba was unable to continue, marking the second defensive casualty in short succession. Even yet, the North Londoners continued to appear assured at the other end of the field as Martinelli's low effort was saved and Gabriel Jesus' attempt was stopped by Antonio Adán. Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte's 25-yard attempt in stoppage time took a deflection and narrowly missed the left post, which was the closest Sporting came to scoring in the first half.

Sporting outplayed Arsenal in the first few minutes of the second half. As Gonçalves regained control in the middle of the field, he fired a shot from just inside Arsenal's half that sailed over the defenseless Aaron Ramsdale to tie the score for the evening. As Paulinho narrowly missed the target with a header from a corner and Marcus Edwards was bravely denied a one-on-one opportunity by Ramsdale, Arsenal had completely lost any control they had over the game.

The Lions had completely turned the tide of the game in the second half, evident from the fact that Arsenal's first shot of the half came in the 79th minute from Fabio Vieira's free-kick which was saved by Antonio Adán. The end of normal time suited Arsenal as they needed to regroup and regain control. They managed to do so and put Sporting CP under pressure, with substitute Leandro Trossard coming close to scoring seven minutes into extra time, but his shot hit the post.

Despite both teams having chances to score, the game ended in a 1-1 draw and went to a penalty shootout. Adán's point-blank save against Gabriel in the dying moments of the second half of extra time had the Emirates Stadium on its feet, but Martinelli missed his penalty, leaving Arsenal trailing 4-3 in the shootout. The pressure was on Santos, the ninth penalty taker, to score for Sporting CP and he did not disappoint, securing a memorable victory for the Portuguese side and extending Arsenal's wait for continental silverware to 29 years.
