Match summary

Entering the game as the top team, Coach Dechamps' army continuously pressed the opponent and quickly controlled the game right after the opening whistle. And in the first minutes, the French team had many obvious opportunities, whether from Varane's header or Tchouameni and Dembele's long-range finishing situations.

Although there were many chances, the French team could not take advantage of them. And perhaps the most unfortunate situation was Giroud's miss after Dembele's favorable cross in the 29th minute.

Despite being the underdog, Poland also created some scoring opportunities with the presence of Lewandowski on the front line. Their best chance came in the 38th minute. Frankowski dribbled past Kounde on the left flank and then crossed the ball through the French defensive line. Zielinski rushed up to shoot but hit goalkeeper Lloris in the knees. The ball bounced off, and Kaminski kicked back but was blocked by Varane at the goal line.

France attacked with vigour, but it wasn't until the 44th minute that France found Poland’s net for the first time, thanks to Giroud's finish. Mbappe received the ball on the left wing and then quickly delivered it to Giroud to face the Polish goalkeeper. The 36-year-old striker’s shot hit the ground and easily beat goalkeeper Szczesny. Thanks to this goal, Giroud became the top scorer in French history with 52 goals.

In the 74th minute, the French team scored their second goal on a counter-attack. After Antoine Griezmann’s clearance from France’s penalty box, the ball found Giroud in the middle of the field, and he passed the ball to the right for Dembele. Giroud attracted the Polish defender to let Dembele pass into the penalty area for Mbappe in an open position. Mbappe shot the ball to the near high corner to defeat Szczesny.

Mbappe continued to perform for the spectators in Doha with a masterpiece in the first minute of the second half. Striker Marcus Thuram received the ball on the left and then passed it into the penalty area for Mbappe to curl the ball to the high corner of Poland’s net. Even though Szczesny got his hand on the ball, he was still unable to make the save.

Poland only recovered one goal in the last minute, when Kamil Grosicki crossed the ball into the right hand of midfielder Dayot Upamecano in the French penalty area. Referee Jesus Valenzuela blew the penalty after reviewing it with VAR, giving Robert Lewandowski the opportunity to score.

The Polish striker initially shot to the bottom right corner and was caught by Lloris, but the referee penalized the French goalkeeper for stepping over the line before the ball rolled. Lewandowski kicked again, and this time he successfully converted his chance to leave the tournament with two goals.

France has reached the World Cup quarterfinals for the ninth time, and they will face England, who just defeated Senegal 3-0.
