In a thrilling round of 16 clash, Arsenal rekindled the tension and intensity of the Champions League knockout stages with a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Porto. This marked the Gunners' return to this stage of European football's premier competition after a seven-year absence, and their first progression to the quarterfinals in 14 years. The atmosphere inside Emirates Stadium was charged with anticipation as the Champions League anthem echoed through the North London venue.

Porto entered the match with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, but Arsenal's Leandro Trossard equalized in the first half with a perfectly executed finish, assisted by Martin Odegaard's intelligent reverse pass. Despite both teams creating opportunities and enduring relentless pressure, neither side could find the decisive goal in regulation time or extra time, leading to a 1-0 scoreline on the night.

Ultimately, it was Arsenal's players who displayed nerves of steel, converting all four of their penalties, while Porto's Wendell and Galeno saw their spot-kicks saved by the outstanding David Raya.

In the midst of an electric atmosphere, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised the home supporters, describing the night as "magical" and noting that it was perhaps the best atmosphere he has experienced at Emirates Stadium since taking charge in 2019.

A night to remember

The famous Clock End corner of the stadium was filled with 3,000 passionate Porto fans who were already in full voice over an hour before kick-off. They warmly welcomed their goalkeepers as they emerged for the pre-match warm-ups, and their excitement reached even greater heights when the rest of the squad appeared, with captain Pepe leading the applause for the boisterous away support.

Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had called on the Gunners fans to create an atmosphere and they responded emphatically. As the teams prepared to take the field, the North London sky reverberated with a resounding rendition of the club's anthem, 'North London Forever.' There is a palpable belief among the fans that this Arsenal team can make a significant impact in this season's Champions League, rather than merely being content with participation. However, Tuesday's match served as a stark reminder of the unforgiving nature of the tournament.

As expected, Arsenal started the game on the front foot, but a poor header from defender William Saliba presented Porto striker Evanilson with an opportunity which he narrowly missed, flashing the ball wide of the far post from outside the area. This served as a reminder of the threat posed by the Porto team, especially after Galeno's late, long-range strike in the first leg.

However, Arsenal failed to learn from the warning and moments later, their defense allowed Evanilson time in the penalty area to control a pass and take a shot at goal. Fortunately for Arsenal, goalkeeper Raya made a smart save to keep the scores level.

Despite Arsenal's early dominance, Porto gradually grew into the game. However, with just five minutes remaining in the first half, Porto's strong performance in the opening 40 minutes was undone. A sublime pass from Odegaard found Trossard in space inside the area, and the Belgian calmly placed the ball into the bottom corner of the net. The Emirates Stadium, buzzing with anticipation throughout the match, finally erupted in celebration.

The goal propelled Arsenal forward in the second half, but Porto seemed content to sit back and absorb the pressure. Arsenal appeared to have taken the lead in the tie for the first time when Pepe got tangled up defending a long ball, allowing Odegaard to chip the ball into the empty net. However, after a brief review, VAR disallowed the goal due to a foul on goalkeeper Diogo Costa, a decision that may be considered one of the softer ones in this season's tournament.

Arsenal manager Arteta, who was seen energetically patrolling the technical area and shouting instructions, was furious with the decision and vehemently protested. As a result, he received a yellow card from the referee.

Despite defending becoming Porto's main priority, they still posed a threat on occasion, with Francisco Conceição testing Raya with a low shot after a swift counterattack.

Arsenal continued to push forward and had opportunities to secure victory through Saka and Odegaard, but it seemed increasingly likely that the tie would go to extra time.

After an enthralling 90 minutes, extra time proved largely uneventful, with the standout moment being a scuffle on the touchline sparked by Kai Havertz pushing Porto manager Sergio Conceição.

The advantage of playing at home proved crucial for Arsenal in the penalty shootout. Encountering a wall of noise and swirling red and white scarves, Wendell and Galeno were unable to maintain their composure, and their missed penalties proved costly for Porto. As Arsenal fans serenaded their manager, they delivered one final rendition of 'Super Mik Arteta.'
