Nagelsmann extends contract with Germany, won't return to Bayern Munich

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has committed to staying in his role beyond the upcoming European Championship, effectively closing the door on a potential return to Bayern Munich to succeed Thomas Tuchel. Despite high-profile coaching vacancies at clubs like Bayern, Liverpool, and Barcelona, Nagelsmann has opted to extend his contract with the German Football Association (DFB) until after the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

The DFB announced the unanimous decision to retain Nagelsmann as the national team coach after Euro 2024, which will be hosted by Germany. This move effectively removes him from consideration for the Bayern Munich job, where he was rumored to be on the shortlist to replace Tuchel, who is departing at the end of the season.

Nagelsmann's tenure at Bayern ended in March 2023 when he was replaced by Tuchel. With his commitment to the national team now solidified, Nagelsmann is set to continue leading Germany through a pivotal period in international football.

"This is a decision of the heart. It is a great honor to be able to train the national team and work with the best players in the country," Nagelsmann said in a statement.

"With successful, passionate performances we have the chance to inspire an entire country. The two wins against France and the Netherlands in March really touched me.

"We want to play a successful home European Championship together and I'm really looking forward to it together with my coaching team Challenge of a World Cup."

German FA president Bernd Neuendorf acknowledged that Julian Nagelsmann's potential candidacy for club managerial positions influenced the decision to extend his contract with the national team at this time.

"It is a strong signal for the DFB and the national team that Julian Nagelsmann will remain national coach beyond the home European Championships. Because he is on the wish list of many big clubs across Europe," Neuendorf said.

"But the national team is, for Julian Nagelsmann, it's more than just a job, it's a real matter close to his heart. Now there is planning security and everyone can concentrate entirely on a successful performance at the European Championships."

Despite leading Bayern Munich to the Champions League semifinals with a 3-2 aggregate victory over Arsenal, Thomas Tuchel confirmed that he will still depart the club in the summer as previously agreed.

"I have a mutual agreement with the club to part ways in June, and this has been communicated and remains unchanged," Tuchel stated during a news conference on Friday.

This season marks the first time since 2012 that Bayern Munich has not clinched the Bundesliga title.
