West Ham vs Southampton final score, result (Premier League): Naif-ety at the back costs Saints again

On a historic Hampden Park night, West Ham shocked three-time champion Southampton with a 2-0 victory to take exclusive possession of the first place in Group A.

West Ham vs Southampton Highlights

The stakes were especially high because both sides have been playing in the top division continuously since 2012, and because West Ham had spent a lot of money and wanted to hold onto important players like England's Declan Rice and Jarrod Bowen. The seasoned winger from Southampton, Theo Walcott, did well to turn in the area and fire a shot just wide of the post even though the Hammers themselves were two spots and one point ahead of their opponents.

West Ham vs Southampton Highlights

With his first goal for the team, Nayef Aguerd calmed a tense Hammers fan base in the 25th minute. He rose highest at a Thilo Kehrer free-kick and sent a looping header over the helpless Gavin Bazunu to make it 1-0. The London Stadium erupted in boos and whistles throughout the stressful four-minute VAR offside review, but the green line from Stockley Park sent the Hammers fans into raptures once again. Soon after, Lukasz Fabiaski made a spectacular save to stop Romain Perraud with a powerful hand around the post to mark his comeback from injury.

West Ham vs Southampton Summary

As Jarrod Bowen's curling attempt crashed back off the bar in overtime, his side was only inches from from going into the break with a 2-0 advantage. That created the ideal environment for West Ham to come out firing after halftime, and after a dull first 45, big chances for Bowen and Kamaldeen Sulemana early in the second half once again sent the nerves jangling.

West Ham vs Southampton Summary

For the first time since 1992, Southampton was attempting to defeat the Hammers on the road twice. As the half progressed, they became more competitive, and soon after the hour mark, both Roméo Lavia and Carlos Alcaraz stung Fabiaski's hands. As Southampton's replacement Paul Onuachu almost tied the score in stoppage time, his header struck the crossbar and West Ham knew it was time to sit back and cling on.

The vital victory for West Ham pushes them from 19th to 14th, illustrating the narrow difference between clubs currently in the bottom eight of the Premier League league. They did so with almost flawless composure. The match was important for another reason as well, as it marked the end of West Ham's streak of 10 home H2Hs versus Southampton with three or more goals in total.
