Ahead of the premiere of the "99" documentary, a three-part Amazon Prime series delving into Manchester United's iconic treble-winning season 25 years ago, former Red Devils defender Neville has addressed the club's current struggles. Acknowledging that it might be "uncomfortable" for the current squad to constantly be reminded of United's past glories, he expressed hope that they could surprise everyone by clinching victory in the FA Cup final against Manchester City later this month.

Speaking to BBC Sport at the documentary premiere, Neville stated: "It's undoubtedly a challenging time. It can't be easy for them to constantly have this history brought up, especially with many of us regularly discussing the team on television. I can empathize with how uncomfortable that might feel."

"I would hope that say, for instance, in three weeks when Manchester United play the FA Cup final against City, they see that as an opportunity to shock this country and probably the world by beating City in a final. It was an FA Cup that Sir Alex Ferguson won in 1990 that started off this successful period that we were part of. Why can’t this FA Cup against Manchester City?"

Under the legendary leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United established themselves as serial winners, culminating in their historic treble triumph in 1999, where they secured the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup. However, their current status paints a starkly different picture. Presently sitting in eighth place in the English top-flight, the club has not claimed the league title since 2013. With the possibility of ending the season without any silverware looming large, there are mounting speculations that manager Ten Hag could face the axe if they fail to secure victory against Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

Looking ahead, Neville's former club, Manchester United, are set to return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon with a home fixture against title contenders Arsenal. This clash will be followed by a midweek showdown at Old Trafford against Newcastle United, who are vying for a spot in European competitions.
