Vincent Kompany is reported to have reached a preliminary agreement to become the next manager of Bayern Munich.

Vincent Kompany was reportedly on the brink of making a stunning move from Burnley to Bayern Munich on Wednesday evening.

Despite Burnley's relegation from the Premier League earlier this month, the 38-year-old has remained a sought-after figure despite the team's meager tally of just five victories all season.

Bayern Munich's quest to find a successor to Thomas Tuchel has seen several candidates turn down the role, including Xabi Alonso, former head coach Julian Nagelsmann, and ex-Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick.

Even attempts to persuade Tuchel to stay failed, leading Bayern to turn to Kompany. Talks with Burnley chairman Alan Pace regarding a compensation fee were reportedly held yesterday, with Bayern hoping to finalize the deal in the coming days.

Kompany, who spent two seasons at Hamburg before joining Manchester City in 2008, is fluent in German, and his football philosophy is said to have impressed the Bayern hierarchy.

However, this move represents a gamble for both parties following their respective disappointing campaigns. Bayern failed to secure the Bundesliga title for the first time since 2012, while Kompany's reputation, previously linked with Tottenham and Chelsea last year, took a hit following Burnley's 19th-placed finish.

The developments regarding Bayern Munich's interest in Vincent Kompany are likely to deal a significant blow to Burnley chairman Alan Pace, who had pinned hopes on Kompany leading the team's charge for promotion from the Championship.

The Burnley board had shown a considerable amount of trust in Kompany, granting him significant authority, particularly in the recruitment department. However, despite significant investment, Kompany oversaw relegation for Burnley this season.

It was anticipated that Kompany would remain in charge for the upcoming season, with Burnley even exploring the possibility of hiring a new coach to work alongside him. Ashley Cole, currently with Birmingham City and noted for his work with England's Under-21s, was reportedly one name considered for this role.

With Kompany's imminent departure, Burnley faces a significant challenge, especially as they are likely to see player departures in the coming weeks ahead of their return to the Championship. Goalkeeper James Trafford is among those attracting heavy interest, with Newcastle United reportedly keen on securing his services. Additionally, Jack Cork and Johann-Berg Gudmundsson, both integral to Burnley's recent history, have already left the club after their contracts expired.
