Southampton vs Grimsby Highlights

Grimsby of League Two scored two penalties thanks to Gavan Holohan. Southampton, a Premier League underdog, was eliminated from the FA Cup by Town after a shocking 2-1 victory at St. Mary's. For the first time since the Second World War, the Mariners advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament thanks to a goal from midfielder Holohan, who took advantage of crazy moments from Saints duo Lyanco and Duje Caleta-Car. With 25 minutes left, Croatian defender Caleta-Car made up for his error by cutting the deficit for the worst team in the premier division.

Yet the 1976 FA Cup champions, who were eliminated by the lowest-ranked team still in the competition, were unable to stop yet another significant setback to a disastrous season. Ten minutes from time, Southampton's replacement Theo Walcott believed he had equalized, but a VAR review determined that he was offside. The surprised hosts were then booed as they left the field.

Southampton vs Grimsby Summary

A League Two team As a result of their shocking 2-1 victory over Premier League team Southampton at St. Mary's, Grimsby unexpectedly advanced to the FA Cup quarter finals. When Lyanco and Duje Caleta-Car gave away penalties, Gavan Holohan scored two penalties each side of halftime to give Grimsby a startling two-goal lead. In the last 10 minutes, VAR overturned an equalizer by replacement Theo Walcott after Caleta-Car had pulled one back with a corner kick.

Grimsby has now eliminated five clubs from a lower level than them in a single season, making them the only club in FA Cup history to do so. They will now play another top-flight opponent on the south coast after being drawn against Brighton in the sixth round. With more than 4,200 raucous supporters waving inflatable fish, Grimsby came on the south coast hoping to advance to the cup competition's round of eight for the first time since 1939.
The Mariners faced a Southampton team that had made nine changes from Saturday's devastating 1-0 loss at Leeds and had more home victories in the cup this season than in the top league. In attempting to energize a small and muted home crowd, the significantly altered Saints side controlled possession but barely threatened. In the 18th minute, Sekou Mara's goal against the goalie for Town, Moussa Djenepo, was disallowed for offside. Later, Mislav Orsic curled just wide, while Carlos Alcaraz missed a diving header attempt.

A dull first half with few opportunities came to life shortly before halftime when Saints defender Lyanco bizarrely handled Joshua Emmanuel's cross as he misjudged a header under little pressure, giving Grimsby the lead after a long VAR review. Just six minutes after the original incident, Holohan calmly stepped up to send Alex McCarthy the wrong way from the spot and cause mayhem among the traveling throngs while referee Thomas Bramall examined replays on the pitchside monitor.
Ruben Selles, the manager of the Saints, would have been hoping for an immediate response from his squad, but his halftime team talk was swiftly overshadowed by a ridiculous display of petulance. Caleta-Car foolishly slapped Danilo Orsi in the back within the 18-yard box after eliminating the threat, resulting in match official Bramall pointing to the spot a second time. Once more taking the lead, Irishman Holohan calmly sent a soaring attempt beyond McCarthy's reach into the left corner. Spanish player Selles replied to the precarious situation by inserting Samuel Edozie and captain James Ward-Prowse off the bench.

Southampton vs Grimsby Summary

By sending an attractive in-swinging corner for the unmarked Caleta-Car to make up for his previous lack of judgment by volleying home unmarked, Ward-Prowse gave the team hope of a comeback. In their pursuit of an equalizer, the Saints pressed forward and nearly fell victim to a counterattack when John McAtee broke through from halfway before fumbling the ball at a key time.

After a fast free kick into the area from Ward-Prowse, Walcott whirled to score, seemingly ensuring extra time. Nevertheless, Stockley Park granted Paul Hurst's team a respite, allowing the boisterous away section to enjoy a great evening before the 240-mile drive home, while Saints were jeered off in disgrace as attention returned to their struggle for survival.
