Dani Carvajal mocked Bukayo Saka during the Euro 2024 final but missed Spain's celebrations afterward.

Spain star Dani Carvajal was forced to miss the Euro 2024 celebrations after taunting England's Bukayo Saka during the final.

Carvajal played the entire match as La Roja secured a late victory over the Three Lions. The right-back came into the tournament on the back of winning a La Liga and Champions League double with Real Madrid.

Carvajal, who earned his first call-up to Spain in 2014 after their dominant run from 2008 to 2012, took over the captain's armband in the second half of Sunday's final following Alvaro Morata's substitution.

After the final whistle, Carvajal dropped to his knees in celebration but missed the party in the dressing room. As he left the Olympiastadion, the 32-year-old revealed he had been summoned for a doping test.

Players are randomly selected for testing, and Carvajal was one of those chosen to provide a urine sample. This meant he missed much of the celebrations with his teammates, prompting him to call for a change in the rules.

He told Mundo Deportivo, "I have had doping here at UEFA… doping in the final, please take it away because you miss a lot of things. Now let’s go to the hotel and let’s see, I’m going to celebrate, I’m not going to deceive you, I’m already going on vacation, so tomorrow you’ll see."

During the first half, Carvajal became somewhat of a villain in England's eyes after tripping Bukayo Saka and stopping a promising counter-attack. The Spain star avoided a yellow card for the foul and, as he ran back into position, turned to face the Arsenal man and made a crying gesture with his hands.

Saka completed the full 90 minutes, but England were left devastated after Mikel Oyarzabal's goal four minutes from time secured Spain's victory. Spain boss Luis de la Fuente was delighted with his team, especially as Rodri was named Player of the Tournament.

De la Fuente expressed his pride in his team and hinted that this success could mark the beginning of a new era of dominance for Spain. “They are tireless. They will keep improving, competing, trying to win and they all need to feel proud. I said it at the beginning and I'll just keep saying it now: they make my life and my work much easier," he said.

“I’m really happy about my country, about Spain, about the excitement we have created and I hope everybody feels as proud about this generation of players who can make history and have a long future ahead of them.

“All I wanted was for my players to believe in me and to be convinced of what I told them, not only me, but also the whole technical staff. I feel proud. We have earned this. Nobody gave us anything for free. The harder things are to get, the more valuable they are.”
