Jordan Henderson no longer an LGBTQ+ ally after Saudi move, says Hitzlsperger

In his critique of Jordan Henderson's move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq, former German footballer Thomas Hitzlsperger expressed his disappointment, suggesting that Henderson's reputation as a LGBTQ+ community ally is now compromised.

Henderson, a strong advocate of the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign and promoting inclusivity in football, departed Liverpool after a 12-year tenure to join the Saudi Pro League club. The 33-year-old signed a lucrative three-year contract worth £700,000 per week, linking up with another former Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard, who manages the team.

Hitzlsperger, who revealed he was gay in 2014 after retiring from professional football, took to social media to share his thoughts on Henderson's move to a country where homosexuality is illegal and punishable by death. He stated, "So Jordan Henderson finally gets his move to Saudi Arabia. Fair play to him, he can play wherever he wants to play. Curious to know though how the new brand JH will look like. The old one is dead! I did believe for a while that his support for the [rainbow emoji] community would be genuine. Silly me."

Al-Ettifaq announced Henderson's signing through a video montage showcasing his career highlights. Notably, in the video, his rainbow armband, which symbolized his support for the LGBTQ+ community while at Liverpool, was edited to appear in black and white.

Several high-profile male footballers have signed lucrative deals with Saudi Pro League clubs this summer. However, Henderson's decision has faced more criticism due to his previous support for the LGBTQ+ community. Liverpool's official LGBT+ fans group, Kop Outs, has questioned whether Henderson's support was truly authentic.

Additionally, Liverpool's club supporters' board, which includes representatives from Kop Outs and the women's supporters' club, expressed disappointment over Henderson's move to Saudi Arabia, stating that it has caused "hurt and division." They acknowledged Henderson's role as a principled footballer who promoted inclusion and expressed their solidarity with Kop Outs, Liverpool's LGBT+ fans' group.
