Darwin Nunez has acknowledged the toll that social media abuse has taken on his confidence amid a challenging season with Liverpool.

Despite contributing 18 goals and 13 assists in 54 appearances across various competitions, Nunez experienced a dip in form towards the end of the campaign, going without a goal in his final eight Premier League matches. Losing his starting position to Cody Gakpo and facing uncertainties with the managerial transition from Jurgen Klopp to Arne Slot intensified speculation about his future, with Barcelona reportedly showing interest.

The weight of his £85 million transfer fee seemed to burden Nunez, with notable missed opportunities drawing criticism. Following Liverpool's 4-2 victory over Tottenham on May 5, he took the drastic step of removing all Liverpool-related posts from his Instagram profile.

However, after Liverpool's 2-0 triumph over Wolves, Nunez changed his Instagram profile picture to one depicting himself, his partner, and child wearing Liverpool shirts. Reflecting on the impact of online negativity, he emphasized its effect on him during recent months.

Darwin Nunez's recent performances for Liverpool have fallen short of expectations.

"While playing, criticism is inevitable, and it's something you have to deal with throughout your career," Nunez expressed in an interview with Por la Jersey via ESPN Uruguay. "Previously, I paid too much attention to it, and it affected me. Anyone who claims that negative comments don't impact them is not being honest; negative comments directed at you always leave a mark."

“They tell me everything, but I ignore those comments because they are of no use to me. I never look at the negative comments on social media, at least now I'm not looking at anything, not even the good stuff. If a game goes badly for me, I rely on my family. When things go badly for me, I get hot, but I try to laugh with my family and not show my son the anger I have, what happened in the game is already there, it's already happened, and there is always revenge.”

Jamie Carragher has raised doubts about Darwin Nunez's future at Liverpool, saying: "After two years there's going to be no improvement in him. This is what he is. He can cause trouble but he's erratic with his finishing – it's not enough to win you trophies so there's a big decision to be made on him."

In contrast, Arne Slot, Liverpool's incoming manager, intends to support Nunez despite the scrutiny. With four years remaining on his contract, Nunez has demonstrated potential, tallying 33 goals and 17 assists in 96 appearances for the club. Slot sees Nunez as possessing the necessary attributes to thrive and aims to nurture his development.

Jurgen Klopp has also defended Nunez, acknowledging the pressure the young player faces. He said: "That’s really tough for a young man, it’s really tough. He knows about the expectations here, he has big expectations on himself."

“That’s tough and you have to go through this. There is no alternative to going through this and he’s going through it. That’s what he’s doing right now. We tried to help him, but in the end, you have to go through it. Everybody has to go through this and this part of a footballer’s career.”
