Kylian Mbappé was reportedly set to join Liverpool in the summer of 2022, having agreed on personal terms for a move to Anfield. However, PSG rejected Liverpool's club-record bid of £168 million, as they sought a fee of double that amount, according to L'Équipe.

At that time, Mbappé was at a crossroads with PSG, who were struggling to secure his future. Liverpool had a clear path to sign him, but PSG's refusal to accept the bid ended those hopes. Instead, Mbappé signed a new two-year deal with PSG in May 2022, with an option for a third year, which also included a signing bonus and increased influence.

Despite this new contract, Mbappé's relationship with PSG remained tumultuous. He expressed his desire to leave a year before his contract expired, leading to tensions with the club's management, who sought a transfer fee from a Saudi Arabian club. Ultimately, Mbappé stayed at PSG for another season, winning more domestic titles but missing out on the Champions League.

In the summer of 2023, Mbappé joined Real Madrid, a club that had shown interest in him since his early days with Monaco. While Liverpool were frequently linked with him during Jürgen Klopp’s tenure, such a high-profile signing would have deviated from the club’s usual approach of signing and developing players for more modest fees.

He once told Sky Germany : "I can say that I think he's a really good player but the financial conditions don't suit us at all. I wouldn't like to ruin the story now... but as far as I know, there's nothing to it. It's possible that someone else from the club is preparing something and wants to surprise me... that hasn't happened in the eight years that I've been here. That would be the first time."

In the months leading up to Mbappé's departure from PSG, Klopp had remarked that he would have been "surprised" if any club pursued the French forward due to his high wages and signing bonuses. However, Real Madrid ultimately secured his services, offering him a salary of £12.8 million per year after tax.
