Why Ronaldo, the 'Symbol,' Continues to Shine as Portugal's Star Attraction

In the lead-up to Portugal's European Championship opener against the Czech Republic, much attention was focused on 39-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo. However, in a familiar twist in Germany, it was a young player who ended up grabbing the spotlight.

Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates with match-winner Francisco Conceicao

'Ronaldo 7' jerseys adorned Leipzig as fans anticipated the veteran forward's historic sixth appearance at a European Championship. While hopes were high for Ronaldo to mark the occasion with a goal, it was Francisco Conceicao, 18 years his junior, who stole the show with a dramatic winner as Portugal kicked off their Group F campaign with a 2-1 victory.

Conceicao made an immediate impact, scoring practically with his first touch after coming on for his competitive debut. Former England striker Alan Shearer praised his decisive contribution, emphasizing the importance of making an impact as a substitute.

"What a story," exclaimed ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy. "I was wondering, what can you do in three minutes as a substitute? He got a bit lucky with the deflection, but he wasn't going to miss that."

The goal marked a memorable moment for Conceicao, the son of former Portugal player Sergio, who celebrated alongside a jubilant Ronaldo, exchanging high-fives with his teammates and punching the air in delight.

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez acknowledged Conceicao's deserving moment, highlighting his readiness to contribute to the team.

"Francisco epitomizes earning his opportunity," Martinez praised. "He has shown character and demonstrated his value to the squad. He deserved this chance and he took it."

A changing of the guard?

At 39 years old, Ronaldo is approaching the twilight of his illustrious career at the highest level, although the continued presence of his teammate Pepe at 41 provides him with confidence that he can still compete in major tournaments.

Critics argue that Ronaldo's inclusion in the starting lineup holds Portugal back, citing his tendency to dominate play and potentially limit the team's attacking fluidity.

However, speaking to Portugal fans in Leipzig ahead of Tuesday's match, it's evident that the majority hold a different view.

One fan described him as "still the best in the world," while Marta emphasized Ronaldo's significance goes beyond his on-field performance.

"He remains crucial because of his motivation, spirit, and ability to unite the team," she explained. "Even beyond the team, he serves as a symbol that brings everyone together."

Despite failing to score against the Czech Republic, Ronaldo had several opportunities. In the first half, goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek thwarted him twice, and in the second half, his header was deflected wide.

Ronaldo continues to be a magnet for attention, illustrated by the fans' anticipation whenever he lines up a free-kick from 25 yards out, though on this occasion, his effort was comfortably gathered by Stanek.
